This data release contains the input, output, and model code used to run a transient simulation of a previously published (Walter and others, 2020) steady-state regional model of Long Island, N.Y. The original model code was updated to MODFLOW 6 (version 6.3.0) and incorporates monthly transient stress periods to simulate conditions from 2005-2019 following methods described in Walter and others (2020). Selected remedial stresses (groundwater extraction and return) were incorporated for select locations in southeastern Nassau County. No modifications were made to the hydrologic boundaries, model layers, or hydraulic properties specified in the original model. A uniform value of 0.25 was used to represent specific...
Understanding how sea-level rise will affect coastal landforms and the species and habitats they support is critical for crafting approaches that balance the needs of humans and native species. Given this increasing need to forecast sea-level rise effects on barrier islands in the near and long terms, we are developing Bayesian networks to evaluate and to forecast the cascading effects of sea-level rise on shoreline change, barrier island state, and piping plover habitat availability. We use publicly available data products, such as lidar, orthophotography, and geomorphic feature sets derived from those, to extract metrics of barrier island characteristics at consistent sampling distances. The metrics are then incorporated...

This data provides an estimated raster surface of dissolved oxygen values across a region covered by an August 24, 2016 AUV survey. The raster was generated by using a natural neighbors interplator within a GIS on the empirical data set. This interpolator was chosen due to the non-normal distribution observed among the data, and its ability to produce smoother approximations than alternative interpolation methods. There are three files available for download in the 'Attached Files' section below. There is a zip file which contains the interpolated dissolved oxygen surface, an xml file which contains metadata, and a layer file which can be used to import the layer's symbology
The Bathymetry surface was created by plotting depths of all data points collected relative to North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), which was converted using the Vertical Datum Transformation tool created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Geodetic Survey, Office of Coast Survey, and Center for Operation Oceanographic Products and Services. The elevation of the bathymetric raster surface was interpolated between these points in a GIS using a spline interpolator. A total of 432 points were used for interpolation. The points were used as the input to create a polygon feature class. The Spline tool was applied using the points and polygon to interpolate the bathymetric...

This data set contains imagery from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). The NAIP program is administered by USDA FSA and has been established to support two main FSA strategic goals centered on agricultural production. These are, increase stewardship of America's natural resources while enhancing the environment, and to ensure commodities are procured and distributed effectively and efficiently to increase food security. The NAIP program supports these goals by acquiring and providing ortho imagery that has been collected during the agricultural growing season in the U.S. The NAIP ortho imagery is tailored to meet FSA requirements and is a fundamental tool used to support FSA farm and conservation programs....

This dataset provides locations and values of water quality parameters from a four-day survey conducted between August 23, 2016 and August 26, 2016 using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) in Great South Bay, New York. Measured parameters include bottom dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, specific conductance, water temperature, and pH. During the four day period, data was collected along 15 transects of the Great South Bay, totaling 60,480 observation points. From these point data, rasters showing the spatial distribution of bottom dissolved oxygen were generated using an interpolator in a GIS. A unique raster is provided for each day of the survey. All data files for download are available within 'Child...

Introduction As a result of storage and disposal practices at a former Manufactured Gas Plant, or MGP, in Bay Shore, NY, a variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been detected at high concentrations in the surficial, upper glacial aquifer of Long Island. Levels of PAHs initially detected over 10 years ago were in the parts-per-thousand range within a groundwater contaminant plume. The plume extended over a half-mile from MGP-related sources to discharge at a local estuarine tributary, Lawrence Creek, resulting, resulting in malodorous hydrocarbon sheens in this tributary and nearby storm drains. These signs of contamination revealed a larger underlying problem and prompted calls by state and local...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing an online map of water-table altitude contours in the upper glacial and Magothy aquifers on Long Island, New York, April-May 2013. USGS serves this map and geospatial data as a REST Open Map Service (as well as HTTP, JSON, KML, and shapefile), so end-users can use the map and data on mobile and web clients. A companion report, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3326 (Como and others, 2015; http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/sim3326) further describes data collection and map preparation and presents 68x22 in. PDF versions, 4 sheets, scale 1:125,000. This polyline shapefile consists of digital contours that represent the water table altitude in the upper...

This data release contains geospatial data defining estimates of the depth to water and water-table altitude in the upper glacial and Magothy Aquifers, the potentiometric surface of the confined Magothy and Jameco Aquifers, and the potentiometric surface of the Lloyd and North Shore Aquifers on Long Island, New York. Estimates are based on 502 water-level measurements made in wells across Long Island during April-May 2010. Water-table contours were interpolated using measurements from 349 wells screened in the upper glacial aquifer or shallow Magothy Aquifer. Potentiometric-surface contours in the confined Magothy and hydraulically connected Jameco Aquifer were interpolated using measurements from 94 wells. Potentiometric-surface...
