This data release contains coastal wetland synthesis products for the geographic region of north shore Long Island, New York. Metrics for resiliency, including unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, and mean tidal range, are calculated for smaller units delineated from a Digital Elevation Model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and ecosystem...

Two marine geological surveys were conducted in Long Island Sound, Connecticut and New York, in fall 2017 and spring 2018 by the U.S. Geological Survey, University of Connecticut, and University of New Haven through the Long Island Sound Mapping and Research Collaborative. Sea-floor images and videos were collected at 210 sampling sites within the survey area, and surficial sediment samples were collected at 179 of the sites. The sediment data and the observations from the images and videos are used to identify sediment texture and sea-floor habitats.

Lifespan of salt marshes in New York are calculated using conceptual marsh units defined by Defne and Ganju (2018) and Welk and others (2019, 2020a, 2020b, 2020c). The lifespan calculation is based on estimated sediment supply and sea-level rise (SLR) predictions after Ganju and others (2020). Sea level predictions are local estimates which correspond to the 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 meter increase in Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) scenarios by 2100 from Sweet and others (2022). The U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and ecosystem...

The data represent sandy beaches, from Maine to Virginia, before Hurricane Sandy which made landfall on October 29, 2012 from the “Beach and Tidal Inlet Habitat Inventories” project. The North Atlantic coast, Maine to Long Island Sound and the Mid-Atlantic coast, Montauk, NY to Virginia datasets used different methodology and are discribed below.North Atlantic:The shoreline was divided into segments (called ‘pockets’) based on whether the area directly adjacent to the beach was developed or undeveloped. Developed beach segments were coded with orange polylines. Undeveloped beach segments were coded with light green polylines. Each shoreline segment was labelled with the name of the municipality followed by a number...

This digital elevation model (DEM) for the Northern Atlantic Coastal Plain (NACP) from Long Island New York to northeastern North Carolina represents the elevation of the topographic and bathymetric surface at a uniform horizontal grid spacing of 100 feet and vertical units of 1 (integer) foot. The land-surface elevations are derived from U.S. Geological Survey 30-meter National Elevation Dataset (NED), and the bathymetric elevations are derived from 3 arc-second (90-meter-nominal) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) U.S. Coastal Relief Model (CRM). Horizontal coordinates are referenced to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and vertical measurements are referenced to the North American...

Co-occurring species with similar resource requirements often partition ecological niches. In the Northwest Atlantic (NWA), endangered roseate terns (Sterna dougallii) nest almost exclusively in coastal island colonies alongside common terns (S. hirundo). Roseate terns are prey specialists compared to common terns, which are opportunistic generalists; however, the two species forage on similar resources during the breeding season. The degree to which these species overlap in their adult foraging ecologies is not well understood. We compared the isotopic niches of nesting adult roseate and common terns by analyzing stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes in eggshell membrane tissues collected in 2018 and...

This dataset is part of the Hard Shoreline Stabilization Structures on Sandy Beaches in the U.S. Atlantic Coast Breeding Range of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) prior to Hurricane Sandy project. The data represent the approximate locations of hard shoreline stabilization structures along the U.S. North Atlantic coast from Maine through Virginia visible in Google Earth imagery at or before the time that Hurricane Sandy made landfall in October 2012. The hard shoreline stabilization structures were identified as part of an inventory of habitat modifications to sandy beach habitat within the U.S. Atlantic Coast breeding range of the federally-threatened piping plover. Hard shoreline stabilization structures...

Since 2002, the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center’s Samples Repository supports research by providing secure storage for geological, biological, and geochemical samples; maintaining organization and an active inventory of these sample collections; and providing access to these collections for study and reuse. This collections inventory has been compiled, organized, and released as a searchable database to provide researchers and the general public with means to discover and request scientific sample material preserved and maintained by the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center Samples Repository. Updates are made to the inventory as the collections grow, and version history information is available...
