These data include species occurrence records of fish in oceans within 1000 kilometers of the United States shoreline. This dataset is a subset of the OBIS-USA dataset as of December 2, 2014 and includes records of the taxonomic groups of Actinopterygii, Chondrichthyes, Myxini, Osteichthyes, and Petromyzontida. After initial taxonomic queries, the remaining data were further queried to retain only samples within 1000 kilometers of the U.S. shoreline. Spatial queries were then used to remove samples overlaying land masses. Data are provided in a geodatabase format, as well as a comma seperated values format. OBIS-USA provides aggregated, interoperable biogeographic data collected primarily from U.S. waters and oceanic...

Crested (Aethia cristatella) and Least Auklets (Aethia pusilla) are crevice-nesting birds that breed in large mixed colonies at relatively few sites in the Aleutian Chain, Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska and Sea of Okhotsk. Time-lapse imagery of nesting habitat was collected over the summers of 2010, 2012, and 2013 to assess use of the primary pre-eruption colony site. At-sea surveys collected relative abundance data to identify shifts in distributions of Crested and Least Auklets around Kasatochi and Koniuji Islands.
Description of condition index value scores for estuarine tidal marsh along and within 10 km of the GCPO LCC Gulf Coast subgeography. A series of raster calculations were used in a dichotomous decision-based framework to compile a per-pixel draft condition index value at a 10 m resolution for GCPO estuarine tidal marsh based on the number of configuration and condition endpoints met within each marsh pixel. Pixels not identified as a estuarine marsh but that were identified as having the potential to be marsh were given a score of 1, provided the pixels were not classified as developed. Potential estuarine tidal marsh pixels were derived from a combination of potential estuarine tidal marsh classes in the Landfire...

These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program. This dataset consists of observations of sea otter (Enhydra lutris) fecal samples (spraint). Observers examined fresh spraint piles to identify major prey classes in the samples and to determine sea otter diets in the Gulf of Alaska region.
Researchers applied methods developed to map cumulative impacts globally to the California Current using more comprehensive and higher-quality data for 25 human activities and 19 marine ecosystems. They first surveyed experts in six sub-regions of the California Current to explore geographic variation in the effects of threats. A workshop was held to use decision theory to evaluate the tradeoffs of using expert opinion to assess threats and associated impacts. Data on ecosystems and threats were gathered at resolutions of approximately one square kilometer. By synthesizing information and inferences regarding anticipated impacts of threats, project participants developed a spatially-explicit understanding of the...
Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) provides many critical ecosystem services, yet we lack basic information on SAV assemblages, biomass and diversity across expansive coasts such as the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM). This research investigated SAV along the nGoM from 2013-2015 examining (1) inter-annual variation in SAV assemblages and biomass across salinity zones and gulf coast eco-regions (Texas Mid-Coast, Texas/LA Chenier Plain, Louisiana Delta, MS/AL), (2) intra-annual variation in SAV assemblages and biomass across salinity zones, (3) response of two species, Ruppia maritima and Myriophyllum spicatum, to salinity and light regimes, and (4) estimated organic carbon stock and storage of SAV habitat soils across...

This projects primary goal was to provide data on occurrence and abundance of SAV resources within the fresh to saline coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico, and to relate these findings to key environmental variables. The data set provides the collected data from 2013, 2014 and 2015 on site location, discrete water quality, aquatic vegetation cover and biomass by species. The same 384 sites were collected each year, between June and September. This project was co-funded by the Gulf Coast Prairie and the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperatives and the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. The Alaska Forage Fish Database (AFFD) is a consolidation of survey data from multiple agencies that were sampled via fishing gear and predator diets. The spatial coverage includes the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Chukchi Sea, and Beaufort Sea. Fish species within the database include Pacific sand lance, Pacific capelin, Pacific herring, juvenile walleye pollock and Pacific cod, myctophid, squid, and euphausiid. The data package is comprised of six tables: (1) catch_table includes counts, weight, and individual morphological characteristics (length, sex, age) of the sampled species; (2) event_table includes sampling time, location, and methods; (3) gear_table includes specifics about of the gear...
These data are estimates of den emergence date, den site departure dates, and duration at den sites as well as post-emergence observations for female polar bears sampled in the southern Beaufort Sea subpopulation 1985-2016 and the Chukchi Sea subpopulation 2008-2017. The data were used to better understand the importance of time spent at the den site post-emergence. Emergence dates and departure dates were determined using collar temperature sensor data.
These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long-term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. The dataset has four comma separated values (.csv) file exported from a Microsoft Access relational database. The data consist of: 1) size and disease state of sea stars, 2) counts of sea stars, 3) taxonomic classification and 4) Gulf Watch Alaska contributors.
The primary objective of this project is to develop a short synthesis report assessing 11 habitats, using a variety of ecological indicators. The report will be one tool that the South Atlantic LCC can use to inform decision-makers, stakeholders, and the general public about the health of South Atlantic habitats. To achieve this project, six discrete project tasks have been identified and are outlined in the next section.1) Project start-up and pre-workshop preparation: IAN will carefully review the Conservation Blueprint habitats and the indicators used to assess the health of these habitats. We will become familiar with the thresholds and data analysis that the South Atlantic LCC is using for their project. This...

Many ecosystem models, particularly those that are “mechanistic” (based on an understanding of processes), are over-parameterized (not identifiable). As a result, model parameters are selected (not estimated using an optimization technique), parametererror/covariance terms become extremely difficult to estimate, and Monte Carlo error propagation does not adequately capture the effect of all uncertain model terms. In those situations, techniques that evolved from Regional (Generalized) Sensitivity Analysis (RSA), such as Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE), Bayes Monte Carlo, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), are preferred techniques for model error propagation. These techniques can be used to...

The South Atlantic Conservation Blueprint is a living spatial plan to conserve natural and cultural resources for future generations. It identifies shared conservation priorities across the South Atlantic region. The fourth iteration of the Blueprint, Version 2.2, was released in November 2017. It used comparable methods and the same spatial scale as Blueprint 2.0 and 2.1, just incorporating updated information for many of the indicators. Version 2.2 was a completely data-driven plan based on ecosystem indicator models for terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environments, as well as a connectivity analysis. It used a 200 m spatial scale. More than 500 people from 150 organizations participated in the development...
