This is a set of scripts developed by Madeline Steele in 2013 as a part of the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) spatial prioritization analysis. They are provided here both as methodological documentation and because they may be useful for other projects. They are not set up to be imported into an ArcGIS toolbox, and all path names would have to be changed before they could be used. They are commented, and variables should be at the top, but they are probably not very useful without a bit of previous Python experience. Please feel free to use and/or splice and dice these scripts, and contact Madeline if you have any questions. Ecoregional assessments provide a regional scale, biodiversity-based context forimplementing conservation efforts. The intent of the assessments is to create a sharedvision for agencies and other organizations at the regional, state and local levels to formpartnerships and ensure efficient allocation of conservation resources. The assessments identify a portfolio of sites for conservation action with a goal of protecting representativebiodiversity and ecologically significant populations. These assessments are the result ofrigorous analysis, incorporating expert review, and are the most comprehensive and currentefforts that support spatially explicit priority setting at an ecoregional scale. This project identifies priority areas in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion to implement conservation strategies for riverine and riparian habitat. This is tailored towards the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) conservation goals and objectives, and provides the foundation for adaptation to a changing climate. This project adopts a “zoned” approach to identifying focal areas, connectivity management zones and zones for riparian habitat and ecological representation. Through a series of workshops and webinars, the ALI articulated its freshwater conservation goals and targets. Key aspects of these goals included: a focus on non-anadromous salmonid (salmon and steelhead) species, include riparian birds and waterfowl as key...
Government agencies that develop infrastructure such as roads, waterworks, and energy delivery often impact natural ecosystems, but they also have unique opportunities to contribute to the conservation of regional natural resources through compensatory mitigation. Infrastructure development requires a planning, funding, and implementation cycle that can frequently take a decade or longer, but biological mitigation is often planned and implemented late in this process, in a project-by-project piecemeal manner. By adopting early regional mitigation needs assessment and planning for habitat-level impacts from multiple infrastructure projects, agencies could secure time needed to proactively integrate these obligations...
The study area shows the boundary (black line) of Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge acquisition area. Existing protected areas are shown in green. The areas considered in refuge design is a more detailed map of study area showing boundary (black line) of Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge acquisition area, Conservation Focal Area or fee zone (blue), protected areas (green), and areas excluded from consideration for the reserve design (brown). Map reproduced from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (2012).

Ecoregional assessments provide a regional scale, biodiversity-based context for implementing conservation efforts. The intent of the assessments is to create a share division for agencies and other organizations at the regional, state and local levels to form partnerships and ensure efficient allocation of conservation resources. The assessments identify a portfolio of sites for conservation action with a goal of protecting representative biodiversity and ecologically significant populations. These assessments are the result of rigorous analysis, incorporating expert review, and are the most comprehensive and current efforts that support spatially explicit priority setting at an ecoregional scale. The Post Doc and supporting capacities will function in an Extension role and serve as a point of contact providing scientific, technical and training capabilities to Resource Managers to understand, apply, and adapt models and tools for specific landscapes, resources, and management strategies as requested and needed by decision makers. This will be accomplished through delivery and utilization of a variety of data sets, models and decision support tools (including the Colorado Plateau Rapid Ecorregional Assessment) in multiple formats as requested and needed by decision makers. These activities will ensure the utility of the CPREA data and models, as well as the BLM Data Portal, Data Basin, and LC MAP data portals...
