General view of the downstream side of Madison Slide. Shortly after the slide was emplaced, the Corps of Engineers, fearful of another catastrophe similar to the one involving the Gros Ventre Slide in Wyoming, decided to cut a spillway across the Madison Slide. The spillway was completed in October 1959, but its gradient was so steep that the released photograph shows part of that erosion. As a result, a new spillway of gentler gradient was constructed by the Corps of Engineers which lowered level of Earthquake Lake about 50 feet. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Madison County, Montana.
