This dataset includes the audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) sounding data collected in 2009 in and near the San Luis Basin, New Mexico. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a series of multidisciplinary studies, including AMT surveys, in the San Luis Basin to improve understanding of the hydrogeology of the Santa Fe Group and the nature of the sedimentary deposits comprising the principal groundwater aquifers of the Rio Grande rift. The shallow unconfined and the deeper confined Santa Fe Group aquifers in the San Luis Basin are the main sources of municipal water for the region. The population of the San Luis Basin region is growing rapidly and water shortfalls could have serious consequences. Future growth and land management...

This dataset consists of 122 magnetotelluric (MT) soundings collected in 2016 in the northern Harrat Rahat, located near the holy city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah in Saudi Arabia. These data were collected as part of a joint project between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Saudi Geological Survey examining the volcanic hazard associated with the harrat. Imaging the 3-D electrical resistivity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the harrat will help in understanding the magmatic system at depth.

Montana Population in persons per square mile from the 2000 Census. This data is a smoothed-over representation of Montana's population density surface, designed to emphasize small areas with high population density. It was derived from U.S. Census Bureau 2000 TIGER files and population counts. The original data was resampled to a 100-meter grid, smoothed, and the highest resulting density of the 100-meter cells in each 1-kilometer grid cell was assigned to the cell. When comparing this data set to the similar data set available from NRIS for the 1990 Census, it is important to realize that the change of population density at a location is likely to be the result of a change in the configuration of the Census...

The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following publication: Anna, L.O., 1986, Geologic framework of the ground water system in Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks on the Northern Great Plains, in parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1402-B, 36 p. Structural features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Structural may: 1) enhance secondary reservoir permeability and 2) provide migration pathways in unconventional rocks.

This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following publication: Slack, P. B., 1981, Paleotectonics and hydrocarbon accumulation, Powder River basin, Wyoming: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 65, no. 4, p. 730-743. A lineament is defined as a linear topographic feature of regional extent that is believed to reflect crustal structure (Hobbs et al., 1976, p. 267). Lineament features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Lineaments may: 1) enhance secondary reservoir permeability and 2) provide migration pathways in unconventional...

This database provides information on Public Water Systems (PWS) and facilitates access to Source Water Protection Program reports that are referred to as Source Water Delineation and Assessment Reports (SWDARs). A public water system is a system that serves 25 or more people or has 15 or more service connections and operates at least 60 days per year. The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulates all types of PWSs in Montana with the exception of those owned and operated by the Native American nations. There are currently over 2,000 PWSs in Montana and between 75 and 100 are added each year. There are three general classes of PWSs. Community (C) PWSs serves a community of year-round residents; towns...

This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2005 along an east-west profile north of Wells, Nevada. It is important to know whether major mining districts in the Northern Nevada Gold Province are underlain by rocks of the Archean Wyoming craton, which are known to contain orogenic gold deposits, or by accreted rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Mojave province. It is also important to know the location and orientation of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone between these provinces as well as major basement structures within these terranes because they may influence subsequent patterns of sedimentation, deformation, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. This study was funded by the U.S. Geological...
This dataset includes magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in July 2019 in the Silverton Caldera complex, Colorado, in the Southern Rocky Mountain Volcanic Field, by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Along with geologic mapping, airborne magnetics, airborne electromagnetics, and audiomagnetotellurics, the USGS collected MT data at 24 sites along five profiles ranging from 2 to 5 kilometers in length: across Red Mountain of the Silverton caldera, within the caldera in Eureka Graben, across the south-eastern margin of the caldera along Arrastra Gulch, across the southern margin of the caldera along the western margin of Kendall Mountain, and across the south-western margin of the caldera along South Fork...

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells were then coded to indicate whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, are both oil- and gas-producing, or are dry or the type of production is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the U.S. Cells were developed as a graphic...

Mining Districts of Montana, developed by the Montana Abandoned Mines Reclamation Bureau. Based on a map of minining districts made in 1935, with some districts revised or removed, with addtional districts added. The districts were revised again in May of 1995. Mining districts were formed by associations of miners in a region who developed rules and laws to govern mining in the district. They sometimes established a monument to serve as the reference point for surveys in the district and created a description of the district boundary. Mining districts are no longer legal entities. Historical narratives describing the mining districts and their boundaries are available at http://deq.mt.gov/abandonedmines/linkdocs/default.mcpx.
