New paleomagnetic and stable isotopic results from the northeastern margin of the greater Green River Basin (South Pass, Wyoming) provide a refined geochronological context for the Wasatchian/Bridgerian Land Mammal Age boundary and suggest the existence of large amplitude Milankovich-scale carbon and oxygen isotopic oscillations in this area during the early Eocene. Analysis of 55 paleomagnetic sites through a 310 m section of Wasatch, Green River, and Bridger Formations indicates several reversals that can be correlated to the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale using radiometric age constraints. This is the first treatment of the mammals of the Grand Staircase?Escalante National Monument (GSENM). GSENM was established in 1996 as a 1.7-million-acre (680,000-ha) federal land reserve under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To successfully manage this new monument, the BLM is presently developing a management action plan. To provide information for the proper management of mammal species of the area, we have reviewed background literature for each mammal potentially found within the Monument boundaries. We propose that a core area, surrounded by a buffer matrix, be used in GSENM and surrounding public lands to preserve ecological processes in their natural state. One hundred thirteen...
Studies were conducted to assess the behavioral responses of silky pocket mice, Perognathus flavus, to test odors associated with two naturally occurring predators (northern grasshopper mouse, Onychomys leucogaster, and Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus), a novel test odor (sugar glider, Petaurus breviceps), and a control odor (water). Pocket mice were tested in a chamber in which they had access to two cages containing food; one of these cages contained no odor (control), while the other contained a predator odor. When both cages contained no test odors, pocket mice showed no preference for one cage over the other; they spent equivalent amounts of time in and in front of each cage, and in the frequency of feeding bouts...
