This product provides tabular estimates of kilograms of nitrogen and phosphorus from a) fertilizer, and b) manure, for counties in the conterminous United States for the period 1950-2017. Data are generated for approximate five-year periods over the time, coinciding with U.S. Department of Agriculture Census of Agriculture census years. This data release also includes a model archive suitable for recreating the 2017 fertilizer estimates.

This product consists of two tabular datasets and associated metadata for major phosphorus fluxes including manure and fertilizer inputs, crop uptake, as well as waste water treatment facility effluent and river export. These are time series data representing water years 1992 to 2012 for watersheds associated with the National Water Quality Program Surface Water Trends project. Dataset 1: Major fluxes and estimated net P balances. Dataset 2: Results of a t-test to determine if site level mean agricultural P balances were significantly above, not different, or below zero. Each site was then assigned to an Accumulation, Equilibrium, or Depletion status categories, respectively. Identification of sites where river...

Soil data were collected from catchments of USGS edge-of-field (EOF) monitoring sites in Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) priority watersheds. As part of this release, soil data from 2016 through 2019 are provided from 14 sites spanning 5 Great Lake States (Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and New York). The data collected are from private farms representing a variety of agronomic systems, landscapes settings, soil types, and climate regimes. These data can be used to investigate relationships among microbial properties (e.g. soil microbial biomass, activity, diversity, and enzymes), general soil structure (e.g. bulk density, soil aggregate structure, soil water holding capacity, soil texture, and infiltration...

The detrimental effects of excess nutrients and sediment entering the Chesapeake Bay estuary from its watersheds have necessitated regulatory actions. Federally-mandated reductions are apportioned to bay jurisdictions based on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Time-Variable Watershed Model (CBPM). The Chesapeake Assessment Scenario Tool (CAST version CAST-19; cast.chesapeakebay.net; Chesapeake Bay Program, 2020) is a simplified, on-line version of the Phase 6 CBPM that simulates watershed nutrients delivery to the estuary using the original model's annual land-surface nutrient source and removal inputs and time-averaged climatological forecasting. Because it runs much faster than the CBPM,...

This U.S. Geological Survey data release contains datasets that combine past data with future projections of nitrogen sources and nitrogen export to the Chesapeake Bay watershed for the years 1950-2050. To help understand the effect of human and environmental changes over this time period, data for nitrogen sources from wastewater, agricultural fertilizer and manure, and atmospheric deposition are combined with datasets of population and land use. These datasets were used in conjunction with a previously calibrated SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) modeling tool to estimate the mean annual loads of total nitrogen to the Chesapeake Bay and nontidal stream reaches in the watershed at...

This product is a series of ten datasets containing tabular data from historical time series sources for the 9,067 conterminous United States sites in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geospatial Attributes of Gages for Evaluating Streamflow II (GAGES-II) dataset. The tables contain time-series data derived from consistent sources of agricultural commodities such as crop types, irrigation, and livestock (1950-2012), dam removals (1930-2013), imperviousness (1974-2012 and 2001-2011) and forest canopy (2011), land use (1974-2012 and 2001-2011), estimated nutrients application from fertilizer and manure (1982 -2012), population and housing unit density (1940-2010), timber activities (1999-2012), water use (1985-2010),...
