Oregon Department of Forestry Marbled Murrelet Management Areas
This package contains 13 polygon layers representing baseline and predicted future climate niches (2050s & 2080s) of Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus). The modeling algorithm Maxent and the Worldclim predictor set have been used to compute niche projections under two emission scenarios (A1B & A2A) based on three general circulation models (CSIRO, CCCMA & HADCM3). The shapefiles are derived from gridded model outputs with a grid cell resolution of 30 arc-seconds.
This theme maps Late-Successional Reserves associated with occupied marbled murrelet sites. The criteria for mapping these areas are identified on pages C-10 of the Northwest Forest Plan Standards and Guidelines( See Supplemental Info). Supplemental direction to the administrative units in BLM IM OR-2003-001 stated that protection will be afforded to all contiguous existing habitat and recruitment habitat (stands that are capable of becoming murrelet habitats within 25 years) for marbled murrelets within a ½-mile radius of any site where occupation behavior (e.g., active nest, fecal ring, eggshell fragments, or birds flying low, through, into or out of the forest canopy within or adjacent to a stand) has been verified....
This theme describes simulated Future Marbled Murelet Sites that have been developed by randomly selecting forest stands based on a series of criteria known to be important for Marbled Murrelet habitat. Since 2017, U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center (USGS WERC) partnered with California State Parks to continue long-term, annual at-sea surveys to estimate at-sea abundance and juvenile (i.e. hatch-year) productivity of Marbled Murrelets (Brachyramphus marmoratus) in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Conservation Zone 6 (central California: San Francisco Bay to Monterey Bay). Marbled Murrelets have been listed as Endangered by the State of California and Threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 1992. This dataset represents Marbled Murrelet designated Critical Habitat under Section 4 of the Endangered Species Act within Western Oregon for the Bureau of Land Management's Western Oregon Plan Revision Project (WOPR), assigned to whole Forest Operations Inventory (FOI) units. All FOI units with greater than 20% area covered by marbled murrelet designated habitat were initially selected; the dataset was then aligned with the federal register descriptions of designated habitat.
