Common offset ground penetrating radar (GPR) data were collected to image near surface streambed structure. These data are to be used in conjunction with fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) and electromagnetic imaging (EMI) data. The combined dataset represents point in time mapping of preferential groundwater discharge points (FO-DTS) and the bed structure that controls where these points are located (GPR, EMI).
The purpose of this field data collection was to test and compare the OceanInsight HDX Mini Spectrometer as an accessible alternative against the more expensive ASD Fieldspec for collecting ground-based hyperspectral reflectance profiles for landcover analysis. The data collection took place in Dog Head Marsh and South Cape Beach within the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR). The hyperspectral profiles were collected side-by-side with both field-spectrometers using comparable sensor collection settings for various ground cover samples. The terrain and vegetation type of these sample were described as well as surveyed using Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK-GPS). This data...
Lake-bottom sediment and associated quality-control samples were collected in August 2020 from one coring location (U.S. Geological Survey station 413756070321301, ASHUMET POND, MASHPEE MI-ASHPD-0011) in Ashumet Pond downgradient from a former fire-training area on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The core was collected to determine if per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were present in the bottom sediments of a lake known to have elevated concentrations of PFAS in surface water and groundwater (Tokranov and others, 2021), and whether the sediments could act as a continuous source of PFAS to the lake. Processing the sediment core entailed collection of discrete samples at intervals ranging from 1-5 centimeters (cm)...

In summer in Massachusetts, USA, preferential groundwater discharge zones are often colder than adjacent streambed areas that do not have substantial discharge. Therefore, discharge zones can efficiently be identified and mapped over space using heat as a tracer. This data release contains fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) data collected along the streambed interface of the main channel and tributaries of the upper Quashnet River, within approximately 1 km of Johns Pond, from June 14 to June 20, 2020. For these deployments a Salixa XT-DTS control unit (Salixa Ltd, Hertfordshire, UK) was used, and measurements were made over several day increments at 0.508 m linear resolution. Specific locations...

Hand-carried frequency domain electromagnetic imaging (EMI) data were collected along the Sanuit River to indicate changes in streambed water quality and/or near surface sediments. These data are to be used in conjunction with fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) data. The combined dataset represents point in time mapping of preferential groundwater discharge points (FO-DTS), and the bed structure that controls where these points are located (GPR, EMI).
Fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) cables were deployed along the sediment/water interface to map high spatial resolution temperature variations along the streambed. These variations are used to detect zones of groundwater discharge. Data are to be used in conjunction with electromagnetic imaging (EMI) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) data. The combined dataset represents point in time mapping of preferential groundwater discharge points (FO-DTS), and the bed structure that controls where these points are located (GPR, EMI).
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides a comprehensive dataset of water-quality results, physical-parameter measurements, hydrologic measurements, and site information collected to study the nature and extent of water quality along groundwater flow paths adjacent to glacial-kettle lakes on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Water-quality samples were collected in 2003, 2005, and 2012 through 2018 in and near seven kettle lakes located on western Cape Cod, with most of the data collected in 2015-2017 from Ashumet Pond, which is located in the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee. Data were also collected at other lakes to compare the lake-specific influences of geochemistry and hydrology on the downgradient groundwater...
This U.S. Geological Survey data release provides a comprehensive dataset of water-quality data and sampling-site characteristics collected in 1978–2018 during a study of the effects of land disposal of treated wastewater on groundwater quality in an unconsolidated sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Treated sewage-derived wastewater was discharged to rapid-infiltration beds at Joint Base Cape Cod for nearly 60 years before the disposal was moved to a different location in December 1995. The discharge formed a plume of contaminated groundwater that partly discharges to a glacial kettle lake about 1,600 feet from the beds and extends about 4.5 miles toward coastal saltwater bodies at Vineyard Sound....

Groundwater, surface-water, sediment, and associated quality-control samples were collected downgradient from a former fire training area and wastewater infiltration beds on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and analyzed for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Samples were collected between July 2016 and February 2019 following U.S. Geological Survey protocols. Field parameters reported include temperature, pH, specific conductance, and dissolved oxygen. Samples were analyzed for chloride, bromide, nitrate, sulfate, and dissolved organic carbon. PFAS samples were extracted using offline solid phase extraction and were analyzed for 24 PFAS at Harvard University using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)....
The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Town of Barnstable, Massachusetts, modified an existing numerical, steady-state regional MODFLOW-2005 groundwater-flow model to evaluate changes in water levels from a reference condition (2015) for nine pumping and wastewater return flow scenarios prepared by the Hyannis Water System. The three-dimensional, steady-state groundwater-flow model used to simulate water level changes is a modified and recalibrated version of an existing model that was used to simulate the potential effects of sea-level rise on groundwater levels of the Sagamore and Monomoy freshwater lenses of the Cape Cod aquifer (Walter and others, 2016) (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20165058). Two...

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife has been studying brook trout populations in Cape Cod groundwater-fed river systems for decades. Recently, a notable reduction in trout population in the Santuit River sparked the concern of several groups, including the Wampanoag Tribe. Brook trout population dynamics may be tied to water quality and temperature changes, which are both impacted by spatially preferential groundwater discharge to the river. The streambed interface temperature and near-surface geophysical data compiled in this data release were collected in summer 2018 as part of a larger effort to characterize the spatial distribution of groundwater discharge zones, and exchanges with surface water,...
