This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of the Tanana A-1 and A-2 quadrangles (500 square miles; equivalent to eight 7.5-minute quadrangles). The area is part of the Manley Hot Springs-Tofty mining districts and adjacent to the Rampart mining district to the south of the Tanana B-1 Quadrangle. This report includes detailed bedrock, surficial, structural, and stratigraphic data. Based on the resulting geologic maps, field investigations, and laboratory materials analyses, the report also includes derivative maps of geologic construction materials and geologic hazards. The Tanana A-1 and A-2 Quadrangles and surrounding area comprise several isolated mountainous ridges in the western Yukon-Tanana Upland...

This Data Release contains geospatially-enabled geological data to accompany the Geologic Map of the Central Beaverhead Mountains, Lemhi County, Idaho, and Beaverhead County, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3413. This map portrays detailed geology of the central Beaverhead Mountains, printable at 1:50,000 scale. These data were collected between 1997 and 2017, and synthesized to provide significant new stratigraphic and structural data and interpretations. Generalized basin geology compiled from sources on both sides of the range is combined with newly mapped bedrock geology to better integrate geologic development of the map area. These data are shared to meet open data requirements...
Many plate boundary faults, including the San Andreas Fault, appear to slip at unexpectedly low shear stress. One long-standing explanation for a “weak” San Andreas Fault is that fluid release by dehydration reactions during regional metamorphism generates elevated fluid pressures that are localized within the fault, reducing the effective normal stress. We evaluate this hypothesis by calculating realistic fluid production rates for the San Andreas Fault system, and incorporating them into 2-D fluid flow models. Our results show that for a wide range of permeability distributions, fluid sources from crustal dehydration are too small and short-lived to generate, sustain, or localize fluid pressures in the fault sufficient...

This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of portions of U.S. Geological Survey Circle B-2 (1955), B-3 (1955), B-4 (1952), C-2 (1955), C-3 (1955), and C-4 (1952) quadrangles. The area is part of the Circle mining district and adjacent to the Fairbanks mining district. This report includes detailed geologic, structural, stratigraphic, and geochronologic data. Based on the resulting geologic maps, field investigations, and laboratory materials analyses, the project has also generated derivative maps of geologic construction materials and geologic hazards.

Geofluids (2010) 10, 193–205AbstractThe variation of permeability with depth can be probed indirectly by various means, including hydrologic models that use geothermal data as constraints and the progress of metamorphic reactions driven by fluid flow. Geothermal and metamorphic data combine to indicate that mean permeability (k) of tectonically active continental crust decreases with depth (z) according to log k ≈ −14–3.2 log z, where k is in m2 and z in km. Other independently derived, crustal-scale k–z relations are generally similar to this power-law curve. Yet there is also substantial evidence for local-to-regional-scale, transient, permeability-generation events that entail permeabilities much higher than...

This report presents 40Ar/39Ar step-heating geochronology results for igneous and metamorphic rocks from the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys' (DGGS) geologic mapping project in the Tanacross A-5 and A-6 quadrangles and adjoining areas. Our results indicate the Hona granodiorite pluton intruded the area in the Late Cretaceous between 76 and 71 Ma. We determined Cretaceous metamorphic ages from 126 to 121 Ma for hornblende, biotite, sericite and muscovite from multiple samples of upper greenschist to amphibolite grade rocks. This is consistent with regional argon results that imply this area is in the upper plate of the Yukon Tanana Terrane (Hansen and Dusel-Bacon, 1998). Basaltic andesite dikes...

This DGGS report presents 40Ar/39Ar age dating results from selected mafic to intermediate intrusions encountered during a geological and geochemical resource assessment project in the Gulkana, Healy, Mount Hayes, and Talkeetna Mountains quadrangles. Three intrusions returned mid-Cretaceous crystallization ages, while one olivine gabbro returned a Late Triassic crystallization age. Two altered or metamorphosed samples yielded Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous ages. Analyses were performed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geochronology Laboratory, and results were reported by Paul Layer and Jeff Benowitz. Products included in this data release are: a summary of sample collection method; the laboratory report,...

This Data Release contains 1:24,000-scale geospatially-enabled geological data to accompany the Geology of the Mineral and Lake Anna West quadrangles, Virginia. The map product is a cooperator series publication and, as such, does not have a specific abstract. Geologic mapping for this map product was completed between 2014 and 2017, with most of the field work occurring between January 2016 and May 2017. Numerous foot traverses were completed along creeks and roads throughout the field area; the shore of Lake Anna was accessed by kayak to provide additional data. Distributions of soil units were considered when assigning bedrock type in areas where outcrop was lacking and helped to distinguish fluvial terrace deposits....
