From June 12-21, 2017, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) geologists carried out geologic mapping and geochemical sampling in the northeastern Tanacross D-1, and parts of the C-1, and D-2 quadrangles. The project area lies within the Yukon-Tanana Uplands, and encompasses the boundary between Fortymile and Lake George assemblages. It includes porphyry copper-molybdenum-gold deposits and prospects including: Taurus, Fishhook (also known as SW Pika), and Pika Canyon, and is adjacent to the Fortymile Mining District to the north. This report and digital data release presents 82 new rock geochemical analyses on historic U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) samples. These samples were originally collected by the USBM as part of their critical and strategic minerals project, which investigated tin occurrences associated with the Ohio Creek pluton, south-central Alaska. Historic USBM sample materials were retrieved by DGGS from the DGGS Geologic Materials Center (GMC), where the USBM samples were transferred as part of the federally funded Minerals Data and Information Rescue in Alaska (MDIRA) program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) in Eagle River holds non-proprietary rock core and cuttings that represent over 13 million feet of exploration and production drilling in Alaska. Additionally, the collection holds more than 252,000 linear feet of diamond-drilled hard-rock mineral core, representing more than 1,800 exploratory boreholes; 76,000 linear feet of oil and gas core and rock samples from more than 1,650 exploratory or production wells; samples for geotechnical boreholes; and numerous surface rock and sediment samples. This DGGS Raw Data File presents 40Ar/39Ar age dating results for selected igneous rocks encountered in the Styx River area of the western Alaska Range. Crystallization ages on biotite and hornblende from plutonic rocks range from about ~60 to ~63 Ma, while a sericite alteration age in plutonic rocks altered by a dike swarm also is around ~63 Ma. Sericite alteration associated with a copper-molybdenum porphyry ranges from ~10 to ~11 Ma. Naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) develops in predictable geologic settings worldwide. Various geologic units throughout Alaska include rock types that could potentially host naturally occurring asbestos minerals. This report and digital data release show geologic map units throughout Alaska rated according to their interpreted potential to host NOA.
