These data were compiled for a manuscript in which 1) we develop a water temperature model for the major river segments and tributaries of the Colorado River basin, including the Colorado, Green, Yampa, White, and San Juan rivers; 2) we link modeled water temperature to fish population data to predict the probability native and nonnative species will be common in the future in a warming climate; and 3) assess the degree to which dams create thermal discontinuity in summer in river segments across the western US. Water surface elevation profiles were generated from data collected by USGS staff from the Columbia Environmental Research Center during multibeam sonar surveys of the channel bed in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

The purpose of this study was to understand how the U.S. Department of Interior’s federal land and resource managers and their stakeholders (i.e., NPS, BLM, FWS, BOR, BIA and tribes, among others) are experiencing and dealing with drought in their landscapes. This dataset consists of a point shapefile with depth, velocity magnitude, XY velocity vector components, and vector angles from outputs of a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model of the Missouri River at Searcys Bend near Huntsdale, Missouri. The model was run at a discharge of 1,291 cubic meters per second (m3/s) to reflect average flow conditions on September 16, 2021, as measured by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Missouri River gaging station at Boonville, Missouri (USGS Gage 06909000). This dataset includes measurements of flow, turbulence, and bathymetry generated from multibeam bathymetry for a short reach of the Missouri River at Searcys Bend (SB) near Huntsdale, Missouri. Flow and turbulence were characterized using a Signature 1000 mounted on an anchored moving boat and an Aquadopp mounted on a tripod near the bed. Repeat bathymetric measurements were made in small patches to characterize bedform movement during velocimetric instrument deployment. The mean daily discharge at the U.S. Geological Survey Streamflow gaging station 06909000 fifteen miles upstream at Boonville, Missouri on September 16, 2021 was 1,291 cubic meters per second.

Tree-ring reconstructions of water-year (Oct 1 through Sep 30th) flow for 31 gaging sites in Missouri River basin, with complete data for 1685 through 1977 (n = 293 water years). The complete 105 tree-ring reconstructions of streamflow used in the Nature Scientific Reports paper were obtained from various sources; 74 flow reconstructions were obtained from the web resource, TreeFlow (http://www.treeflow.info/), and an additional 31 flow reconstructions (provided here) for the Missouri River basin were obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey in Bozeman, Montana.

Grass carp, bighead carp, and silver carp spawn in flowing water. Their eggs,and then larvae, develop while drifting. Hydraulic conditions control spawning locations, egg survival, and the downstream distance traveled before the hatched larvae can swim for low velocity nursery habitats. This dataset contains cross-sectionally averaged flow metrics from measurements made with acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) on the Missouri River near Wolf Point, MT during 2018 and 2019. Each data point represents a single-pass measurement with a boat-mounted ADCP driven from bank-to-bank along lateral transects spaced ~15 meters apart along a 33 kilometer reach. The measurements were collected as part of a bathymetric survey in which two USGS survey boats were each mounted with an ADCP and single beam echosounder that were deployed simultaneously. Channel topography was generated from data collected by USGS staff from the Columbia Environmental Research Center during single-beam sonar surveys of the channel bed in June 2018 and terrestrial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) surveys of channel banks in September 2018. This dataset is part of a multi-scale assessment and classification for segments of 15 rivers of the Upper Midwest United States that meet various criteria for largeness. All rivers are tributary to the Mississippi River system. The 11,600 kilometers (km) that qualified as large were parsed into 10-kilometer-long segments and classified by major alterations (free-flowing, navigation pools, storage reservoir). The dataset also includes a statistically based, component classification based on the 10-km segments.
