These plant and soil data were collected by Timothy M. Wertin and Sasha C. Reed in the spring, summer, and fall of 2011 at a climate manipulation experiment site near Moab, UT (38.521411, -109.470567). These data were collected to assess how warming affects leaf photosynthesis, soil CO 2 efflux, and soil chemistry in plots of ambient and warming treatments.

In support of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Southwest Biological Science Center researchers, and in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), the USGS National Uncrewed Systems Office (NUSO) conducted uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) remote sensing flights over two BLM Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) plots at the NEON Moab site in Utah for multi-scale carbon sequestration research on public lands. The UAS data collected include natural color, multispectral, and hyperspectral imagery, and lidar to capture diverse information about vegetation and soils on drylands. The first site (“site 1”) features intact sagebrush and was mapped on May 3,...

The electrical conductivity of the earth is used to help infer lithological and pore fluid properties. Various geophysical methods can provide estimates of the distribution of below ground electrical conductivity, with each method having certain limitations. This data release presents raw and processed results from land-based and water-based frequency domain electromagnetic induction imaging (EMI) data collected from March 31 to April 2, 2015. Data were primarily collected by walking throughout the wetland and riparian zones with the GEM-2 instrument (Geophex, Ltd.) at approximately 1 m off the ground in horizontal coplanar (ski flat) mode. A survey along a section of the Colorado River in a kayak was also collected...

Quantitative evaluation of groundwater/surface water exchange dynamics is universally challenging in large river systems, because existing physical methodology often does not yield spatially-distributed data and is difficult to utilize in deeper water. Here we apply combined frequency domain electromagnetic induction (EMI) and direct contact vertical electrical sounding (VES) measurements to identify shallow, fresh groundwater discharge to the Colorado River through a 4 km2 wetland that borders the town of Moab, Utah, USA. EMI data were collected by a mobile tool that was hand carried or floated on the back of a kayak, providing extensive spatial coverage for the upper approximate 5 m of river channel/sediments....

The data release presents observations of riparian vegetation, topography, and ground cover in two river reaches of the Upper Colorado River within a river segment extending 208 river kilometers (rkm), from near the Colorado/Utah border to the confluence of the Green River. Methods included field observations and analysis of the plant community five times over eight years in the fall of 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2017, encompassing a second cycle of biocontrol-induced dieback of invasive Tamarix spp. shrubs. The data release includes four .csv files related to field observations: UTM coordinates of field transects; vegetation, topography and ground surface information at the pinpoint level and at the transect level;...

Rock samples (n=4) of anhydrite with rounded nodules of braitschite, a hydrous calcium rare-earth borate mineral. Samples are from the Cane Creek Potash Mine, Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, located in Grand County, UT, south of Moab, Utah. The samples were discovered in the marine evaporites in the Paradox Member of the Hermosa Formation of Pennsylvanian age in the Paradox basin. The zone of braitschite nodules occurs in depths from 3,000 to 3,500 feet. The braitschite was found in pinkish to white nodules that are approximately 65% braitschite and approximately 35% quartz, anhydrite, dolomite, halite as well as minor amounts of hematite and the occassional crystals of chalcopyrite. Sample material was collected in...
