Arid ecosystems are often vulnerable to transformation to invasive-dominated states following fire, but data on persistence of these states are sparse. The grass/fire cycle is a feedback process between invasive annual grasses and fire frequency that often leads to the formation of alternative vegetation states dominated by the invasive grasses. However, other components of fire regimes, such as burn severity, also have the potential to produce long-term vegetation transformations. Our goal was to evaluate the influence of both fire frequency and burn severity on the transformation of woody-dominated communities to communities dominated by invasive grasses in major elevation zones of the Mojave Desert of western...

The recognition and characterization of aeolian dust in soil contribute to a better understanding of landscape and ecosystem dynamics of drylands. Results of this study show that recently deposited dust, sampled in isolated, mostly high-ground settings, is chemically and mineralogically similar on varied geologic substrates over a large area (15 000 km2) in the Mojave Desert. The silt-plus-clay fraction (fines) on these isolated surfaces is closely alike in magnetic-mineral composition, in contrast to greatly dissimilar magnetic compositions of rock surfaces of vastly different lithologies, on which the fines have accumulated. The fines, thus, are predominantly deposited dust. The amounts of potential nutrients...

Environmental Analysis Data: These data were compiled to investigate the complex interactions between environmental gradients and geographic distance across the Intermountain West of the western United States. Due to complex topography, physiographic heterogeneity, and complicated relationships with large bodies of water, spatial autocorrelation of environmental similarity may be expected. We provide an R script (VarioAnalysis.R) that uses four associated data files (annualprecip.csv, annualSWA.csv, annualtemp.csv, key.csv) to reproduce Figure 3 in Massatti et al. 2020 (see Larger Work Citation). The data files contain information on yearly soil water availability, temperature, and precipitation, which are summed...
The U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), approximately 35 mi north-northeast of Barstow, California, covers approximately 1,177 square miles, and is comprised of ten groundwater basins, three of which have been subdivided into subbasins on the basis of additional hydrologic testing. Since the early 1990s, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been studying water resources issues at Fort Irwin. One issue of concern is the potential effect of groundwater development resulting from planned training expansion and infrastructure at the NTC on natural springs and seeps, an important water source for wildlife. In 2010, the USGS entered into cooperative agreements with the U.S. Army to complete studies of...

These data were compiled to assess the size, structure, and health of various populations of Actinemys pallida along the length of the Mojave River. Objective(s) of our study were to determine the extent of injuries and abnormalities within our Actinemys pallida populations (including statistical analyses comparing injuries with turtle sex and size) and estimate the cause(s) of the injuries and abnormalities. These data represent injuries and abnormalities from the effects of physical hazards encountered by turtles in their habitats. These data were collected in the Mojave Desert of California at three separate study sites along a length of the Mojave River in San Bernardino County between May 1998–October 1999...
The Las Vegas Formation (LVF) is a well-characterized sequence of groundwater discharge (GWD) deposits exposed in and around the Las Vegas Valley in southern Nevada. Nearly monolithologic bedrock surrounds the valley and provides an excellent opportunity to test the hypothesis that GWD deposits include an aeolian component. Mineralogical data indicate that the LVF sediments are dominated by carbonate minerals, similar to the local bedrock, but silicate minerals are also present. The median particle size is ~35 µm, consistent with modern dust in the region, and magnetic properties contrast strongly with local bedrock, implying an extralocal origin. By combining geochemical data from the LVF sediments and modern dust,...

The Mojave Vegetation field data were collected to provide context for the classification of the Central Mojave Desert into various vegetation classes. The field data consist of five CSV tables, recovered from their original Microsoft Access format, that together describe the vegetative, environmental and geomorphic properties of the Central Mojave Desert at the time of collection, 1997-1999. The portion of the study’s field data preserved in this release consists of observations made at the 1,219 points included in the plots points shapefile (plots_points.shp) found on the Plots Points and Photographs ScienceBase page. The field measurements (described here) and photographs (described in the Plots Points and Photographs...
Water levels were measured during March 2014 in wells in the Antelope Valley and Fremont Valley groundwater basins, southwestern Mojave Desert, California, in cooperation with the Antelope Valley-East Kern Water District, Palmdale Water District, and Littlerock Creek Irrigation District. These data document recent conditions and, when compared with previous data, changes in groundwater levels. A regional water-table map was constructed using data from about 200 wells.
This collection includes shell-skeletal remains of Gopherus agassizii from 1980 through 2012 that was collected as part of a monograph covering the desert tortoise populations inside and outside the fenced Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area of California during a period of population decline. The principal objectives of the study were to compare trends in demographic and habitat data inside the protective fence with those outside the fence. Populations and habitat outside the fence were unprotected from recreational vehicle use and sheep grazing. Data for each shell-skeletal remain found on the long-term, 7.77 square kilometers plot, included carcass number, previous number as a live tortoise, date of collection,...

NPS is transforming the way park resource information is managed and delivered to parks, partners, and the public. IRMA (Integrated Resource Management Applications) is the name given to the project that has guided this transformation, and to the web portal that is its end result. View or download the IRMA project brief (.pdf). IRMA is a portfolio of tools and applications, and the beginnings of a "one-stop" for data and information on park-related resources. From IRMA you can search for, view, and download documents, reports, publications, data sets, and park species lists. You can get information on park visitor numbers, park projects, and apply for a park research permit. Park staff can navigate to certain internal...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set consists of digital water-table contours for the Morongo Basin. The U.S. Geological Survey constructed a water-table map of the Morongo ground-water basin for ground-water levels measured during the period January-October 1994. Water-level data were collected from 248 wells to construct the contours. The water-table contours were digitized from the paper map which was published at a scale of 1:125,000. The contour interval...
These data comprise air, plant (creosote bush, Larrea tridentata), and unsaturated-zone tritium measurements and plant metrics collected during 2012 to 2016 from three sampling areas at the Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) near Beatty, Nevada: (1) within a low-level radioactive waste facility, (2) buffer area adjacent to the waste facility, and (3) reference area 3 kilometers from the waste facility. Plant metrics include foliage-water content and canopy and stem dimensions. Supporting information includes a list of publications that provide descriptions of methods used to collect the data and results of previous tritium research at the ADRS. All data and supporting information are compiled in an electronic...
The interactions between playa hydrology and playa-surface sediments are important factors that control the type and amount of dust emitted from playas as a result of wind erosion. The production of evaporite minerals during evaporative loss of near-surface ground water results in both the creation and maintenance of several centimeters or more of loose sediment on and near the surfaces of wet playas. Observations that characterize the texture, mineralogic composition and hardness of playa ? surfaces at Franklin Lake, Soda Lake and West Cronese Lake playas in the Mojave Desert (California), along with imaging of dust emission using automated digital photography, indicate that these kinds of surface sediment are...

In this observational pilot study, we worked at the largest existing solar tower facility in the world (Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System - ISEGS) to assess the efficacy of using radar, surveillance video, and insect trapping to monitor animals flying near the towers. During week-long site visits in May and September, we monitored the airspace surrounding towers and observed insects, occasional birds, and bats under a variety of environmental and operational conditions. This dataset is comprised of the unedited digital thermal samples we gathered during those site visits and consist of 1280x720 pixel arrayed infrared measures from a FLIR SC8340HD science-grade thermal (SGT) camera with a 200mm lens. The data...
