The diversity and characteristics of species within Inocybe section Inocybe Singer were investigated in Finland. As a result, 11 species are described here as new: Inocybe acutoides, I. amicta, I. boreocarelica, I. bufonia, I. ericetorum, I. kittilensis, I. lapponica, I. paludicola, I. porcorum, I. pseudoteraturgus, and I. silvae-herbaceae. Detailed macroscopic and microscopic descriptions, habitat information, and ITS sequence data are included. The new species are compared with each other and with similar species within the section, and a key is provided for the European boreal species. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) fixation by Alnus tenuifolia can account for up to 70% of the N accumulated during vegetation development along river floodplains in interior Alaska. We assessed disease incidence and related mortality of a recent outbreak of fungal stem cankers on A. tenuifolia across three regions in Alaska during the 2005 growing season, and determined the impacts on N-fixation rates, nodule biomass, and stand-level N-fixation inputs. The highest percentage of ramets colonized or dead with canker was found on Tanana River plots, suggesting the epidemic is most severe in the Fairbanks region. Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) stands were sampled in central Yukon, Canada (61.5?64°N latitude), which represented the northernmost 9% of the tree's North American range. Within this area, lodgepole pine occupied only ? 2% of the landscape. This study determined: 1) what forest sociations occurred (i.e. structural dominance-types); 2) how plant growth form composition and richness differed from the central portion of the species? geographical range; and 3) if stands were biased towards occurring on more thermally favorable south-facing slopes. Symbiotic fungi's role in providing nitrogen to host plants is well-studied in tundra at Toolik Lake, Alaska, but little-studied in the adjoining boreal forest ecosystem. Along a 570 km north-south transect from the Yukon River to the North Slope of Alaska, the 15N content was strongly reduced in ectomycorrhizal and ericoid mycorrhizal plants including Betula, Salix, Picea mariana (P. Mill.) B.S.P., Picea glauca Moench (Voss), and ericaceous plants. Mining and processing of lead (Pb)/zinc (Zn) ore at the Anvil Range mine occurred near the town of Faro in the Yukon Territory, Canada, for approximately 30 years, beginning in 1968. A study was undertaken to examine whether the mining activities had left a detectable "footprint" on the environment in the way of heavy metal phytoaccumulation. Various effects on plant growth associated with handling or touching plants are well documented from greenhouse and laboratory studies, but are generally unknown or ignored under field conditions. We examined the prevalence of the effects of handling, at levels typical of many ecological experiments, on aboveground biomass and damage by invertebrate herbivores for a total of 16 common species from three plant communities in western Canada. High latitude trees are increasingly showing mixed growth responses to climate warming. Recent studies of white spruce (Picea glauca ) in the Brooks Range of Alaska have revealed that trees in the west have generally shown positive growth responses, while trees in the central and eastern Brooks Range have shown mixed and negative growth responses, respectively.
