This report describes the results of the 2006 field season for the Central Alaska Network (CAKN) flowing waters monitoring program. The key objectives for the 2006 field season were to assess the logistics involved in various sampling approaches and to collect data from a variety of streams as a way to begin to determine the range of natural variability for various candidate biological, chemical and physical metrics. I was able to collect data at 13 study sites located throughout WRST. Two of these sites were visited in two different seasons (summer and autumn) to assess seasonal variability, which was substantial for invertebrates and diatoms and moderate for water chemistry parameters. At one of these sites, multiple...

Issue Title: Special issue: "Holocene paleoenvironmental records from Arctic lake sediment" Wetlands and lakes in the Tanana Valley, Alaska, have provided important resources for prehistoric humans who inhabited this region. We examine an ~11,200 cal yr BP record of environmental and paleolimnological changes from Quartz Lake in the middle Tanana Valley. Our data are also presented in the context of recent archaeological findings in the lake's general vicinity that have 18 associated AMS ^sup 14^C dates. We analyzed the stable-carbon and nitrogen isotope composition of total organic matter from the core, coupled with oxygen and carbon isotope analyses of Pisidiidae shells (fingernail clams), in addition to chironomid...

INTRODUCTION This report briefly describes and presents geochemical and biogeochemical data for a cooperative study in the Fortymile Mining District, east central Alaska. This study is being funded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Program through Fiscal Year 2001. Cooperative funds are being provided from various State of Alaska sources through the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. Results for the first field season completed in June 1997 are presented in Crock and others (1999). The study's second field season was completed in June 1998 and the results of the sample analyses for this phase of the study are presented here. Primary objectives of this study are: * Determine the regional...

This study focussed on the development and evaluation of bioassessment methods for wadeable streams of the Yukon River basin within Yukon Territory. There were three components to this study. The first was the detailed development, evaluation and comparison of Reference Condition Approach (RCA) bioassessments using fish and benthic macroinvertebrates (BMI) from the same stream sites. Second, methods were developed for examining the relationships between stream biota and a gradient of placer gold mining. Finally, the statistical power of bioassessments developed for the Yukon River basin was evaluated by applying the bioassessments to stream site data subjected to simulated impacts. Comparison of RCA bioassessments...

Executive Summary The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, completed an assessment of hydrology, water quality, and trace-element concentrations in streambed sediment of the upper Birch Creek watershed near Central, Alaska. The assessment covered one site on upper Birch Creek and paired sites, upstream and downstream from mined areas, on Frying Pan Creek and Harrison Creek. Stream-discharge and suspended-sediment concentration data collected at other selected mined and unmined sites helped characterize conditions in the upper Birch Creek watershed. The purpose of the project was to provide the Bureau of Land Management with baseline information to evaluate watershed water quality...

The Central Alaska Network (CAKN) and the Arctic Network (ARCN) are part of the National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program. CAKN is composed of three national park units: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Denali National Park and Preserve, and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. ARCN is composed of Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Noatak National Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park, Cape Krusenstern National Monument and Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. The Inventory and Monitoring Program is the result of the National Parks Omnibus Management Act, which was passed by Congress in 1998. This Act directs the National Park Service to ?establish baseline...

To better understand the linkage between lake area change, permafrost conditions and intra-annual and inter-annual variability in climate, we explored the temporal and spatial patterns of lake area changes for a 422?382-ha study area within Yukon Flats, Alaska using Landsat images of 17 dates between 1984 and 2009. Only closed basin lakes were used in this study. Among the 3529 lakes greater than 1 ha, closed basin lakes accounted for 65% by number and 50% by area. A multiple linear regression model was built to quantify the temporal change in total lake area with consideration of its intra-annual and inter-annual variability. The results showed that 80.7% of lake area variability was attributed to intra-annual...

Over 1999–2002, an extensive series of contaminant studies was conducted on freshwater biota of Canada's Arctic and Subarctic regions. The majority of inorganic contaminant studies focused on mercury and fish. While mercury concentrations were low in benthic feeding fish such as whitefish, predatory fish such as lake trout, pike, and walleye frequently had mercury levels which exceeded 0.2 μg/g, the consumption guideline for frequent consumers of fish, and 0.5 μg/g, the guideline for the commercial use of fish. Numerous consumption advisories were issued for lakes along the Mackenzie River. Relatively high mercury levels appear to be due to a combination of relatively old fish populations (because of light fishing...
