From April through September of 2018, water-quality data were collected at 35 locations from select tributaries, embayments, and nearshore lake locations along New York's portion of Lake Ontario in support of the 2018 Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and the Lakewide Action Management Plan. These data include environmental, replicate, and blank samples of nutrients, suspended solids, sodium, and chloride, as well as field measurements of physical parameters (temperature, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, phycocyanin relative fluorescence, chlorophyll relative fluorescence, photosynthetically active radiation, and phycocyanin:cholorphyll...

Observations and subtle shifts of vegetation communities in western Lake Erie have USGS researchers concerned about the potential for Grass Carp to alter these vegetation communities. Broad-scale surveys of vegetation using remote sensing and GIS mapping, coupled with on-the-ground samples in key locations will permit assessment of the effect Grass Carp may have already had on aquatic vegetation communities and establish baseline conditions for assessing future effects. Existing aerial imagery was used with object-based image analysis to detect and map aquatic vegetation in the western basin of Lake Erie.

Background: A sequence of gently dipping carbonate bedrock - the Bertie Formation, Akron Dolostone, and Onondaga Limestone crop out along a 2- to5-mile wide band in western and central New York. These bedrock units trend east-west for 250 miles across the State and form extensive carbonate-bedrock aquifers which transmit and yield water from solution-enlarged fractures, bedding planes, and other openings (Olcott, 1995). Bedding planes or sub-horizontal fractures typically are the most enlarged and important water conduits. Karstic features such as sinkholes, swallets, solution channels, and caverns can locally transmit large amounts of surface water into the ground where the groundwater can move quickly and over...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data along four flight lines were collected in Everglades National Park, Florida as part of a larger survey. Data were collected during October 2001. These lines, totaling 95.2 line-kilometers, repeated the path of four lines from earlier AEM survey collected in December 1994 (released under USGS Open-File Report 02-101 downloadable at https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/ofr02101). Electromagnetic data were acquired with Dighem VRES frequency-domain system. Magnetic data were collected with a Scintrex CS2 cesium-vapor magnetometer. The nominal elevation of the electromagnetic system was 30 m. This data release includes raw and processed AEM data. This release also...

Problem - Urbanization of the 150-square-mile Irondequoit Creek basin in Monroe and Ontario Counties, N.Y., continues to spread southward and eastward from the City of Rochester. Conversion of forested land to other uses over the past 40 years has increased to the extent that more than 50 percent of the basin is now developed. This expansion has increased flooding and impaired stream-water quality in the northern (downstream) half of the basin. A precipitation-runoff model of the Irondequoit Creek basin could be used as a management tool by water-resources managers to better understand the hydrology of the basin, permit simulation of planned or hypothetical land-use changes, evaluate the adverse effects of future...

The Ellison Park wetland, a 423-acre, predominantly cattail marsh at the mouth of Irondequoit Creek in Monroe County near Rochester, N.Y., was evaluated for its potential role to decrease phosphorus loads that are derived from a 151-square-mile largely urbanized area and that ultimately enter and exacerbate efforts to ameliorate the eutrophic conditions in Irondequoit Bay. Monroe County's water-quality management plan included (1) modification of flow patterns upstream from and within the wetland by diverting storm runoff into backwater areas of the wetland, and (2) construction of a flow-control structure midway through the wetland that would cause short-term rises in water levels and increased dispersion of...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected in Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida as part of a larger survey. Data were collected during October 2001. The Big Cypress National Preserve part was the largest of three segments, totaling 2692.2 line-kilometers. Electromagnetic data were acquired with Dighem VRES frequency-domain system. Magnetic data were collected with a Scintrex CS2 cesium-vapor magnetometer. The line spacing was 400 m and several tie lines were flown. The nominal elevation of electromagnetic system was 30 m. This data release includes raw and processed AEM data. This release also includes unprocessed and processed magnetic data that have been drift corrected.

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected near Homestead, Florida as part of a larger survey. Data were collected during October 2001. The Homestead part of the survey consisted of 277.1 line-kilometers. Electromagnetic data were acquired with Dighem VRES frequency-domain system. Magnetic data were collected with a Scintrex CS2 cesium-vapor magnetometer. The line spacing was 400 m and a single tie line was flown in the middle of the survey area. The nominal elevation of the electromagnetic system was 30 m. This data release includes raw and processed AEM data. This release also includes unprocessed and processed magnetic data that have been drift corrected.
