This data release contains compiled historical groundwater-withdrawal data for the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida from 1925 to 2018. Most groundwater-withdrawals were distributed to groundwater wells and separated into water-use categories of industrial, production wells, power generation, mining, domestic, irrigation, livestock or commercial. Groundwater-withdrawal data were obtained, where available, from existing database resources hosted by various State and Federal agencies. For Texas, data were obtained from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) from both existing Groundwater Availability Models (GAM), and from historical groundwater-withdrawal data....

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and Fort Bend Subsidence District, constructed a finite-difference numerical groundwater-flow model of the northern Gulf Coast aquifer region for 1897 through 2018 using MODFLOW 6 with the Newton formulation solver to simulate groundwater flow and land-surface subsidence. Model parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis were conducted with PEST++ Iterative Ensemble Smoother software. The simulated results are described in the associated U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1877. The model archive provided in this U.S. Geological Survey data release includes all the necessary files to run the MODFLOW 6 model and...

Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Environmental Protection has collected datasets to assess the health of streams since the early 1990s. Datasets include geomorphic stream cross-sectional surveys, fish and benthic macroinvertebrate counts and taxa abundance, and water chemistry data collected at the time of benthic and fish sampling (dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, air temperature, and water temperature). Data span years 1992 to 2020 at five watersheds within the Clarksburg study area. Watersheds include a forested reference site (Soper), an urban site with centralized stormwater management (Crystal Rock), and three treatment watersheds (TR104, TR109, and Cabin Branch) within the Clarksburg Special...

This data release presents results of chemical analyses of groundwater sampled during summer and autumn of 2019 and spring of 2020 from 23 wells in the Great Miami buried-valley aquifer (GM-BVA) of southwestern Ohio. Groundwater and quality-control samples were analyzed to determine concentrations of selected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Groundwater and related quality-control samples were collected from 22 of 23 wells and analyzed for 24 different PFAS by two different laboratories that used slightly different proprietary isotope-dilution based adaptations of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) method 537.1, referred to as method 1 and method 2. Results from PFAS analysis of groundwater...

From July through December 2016, 56 environmental samples were collected from the Mohawk and Western New York River Basins. Samples were collected from nine production wells and 13 domestic wells in the Mohawk River Basin, and 17 production wells and 17 domestic wells in the Western New York River Basins. Samples were collected and processed using standard USGS methods and analyzed for 320 constituents including physicochemical properties, dissolved gases, major ions, nutrients, trace elements, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, radionuclides, and indicator bacteria. Analytical methods are described and referenced in Gaige and others (2023). Five of the Mohawk River Basin wells (HE 622, HE 624, OE1468, SA1501,...

This child item model archive summary documents a surrogate regression model to estimate suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) at the Mohawk River above State Highway 30A at Fonda, New York. (U.S. Geological Survey station number 01349527). The methods used follow USGS guidance in relevant Office of Surface Water/Office of Water Quality Technical Memoranda and USGS Techniques and Methods, book 3, chap. 4 (Rasmussen and others, 2009). Thirty-nine concurrent measurements of SSC and turbidity, collected from June 12, 2015, through May 28, 2020, were used in the model calibration dataset. Samples were collected across 94 percent of the range in observed discharge and 24 percent of the range in observed turbidity during...

This dataset describes in stream turbidity for watersheds included in a paired watershed study including a forested reference watershed and three urban watersheds with centralized or decentralized stormwater management in Clarksburg, Maryland USA. Turbidity was monitoring from June 2010 to December 2010, March 2011 to December 2011 and June 2012 to October 2012 in For-MD and Cent-MD, and only the 2011-2012 time period in Dist-MD. Mean turbidity in NTU was recorded at 5-minute intervals during the 2010-2012 monitoring seasons with a Forest Technology Systems, Digital Turbidity Sensor DTS-12. Mean turbidity was computed from 100 instantaneous recordings during the time interval. Sensor accuracy is ±2% of reading (0-399...

This dataset describes streamflow and precipitation event statistics for four watersheds located in Clarksburg, Maryland, USA. Streamflow and precipitation events were identified from fourteen years of sub-daily (5- and 15-minute) monitoring data from October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2018. A 6-hour inter-event window was used to define discrete streamflow and precipitation events. The following streamflow metrics were calculated for each event area normalized peak streamflow, runoff yield, runoff ratio, streamflow duration, time to peak, and rise rate. Precipitation event metrics include total precipitation depth and precipitation event duration.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas on August 25 as a category 4 hurricane with wind gusts exceeding 150 miles per hour. As Harvey moved inland the forward motion of the storm slowed down and produced tremendous rainfall amounts to southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. Historic flooding occurred in Texas and Louisiana as a result of the widespread, heavy rainfall over an 8-day period in Louisiana in August and September 2017. Following the storm event, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) hydrographers recovered and documented 2,123 high-water marks in Texas, noting location and height of the water above land surface. Many of these high-water marks were used to create flood-inundation maps for...

An investigation was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs that found 1,132 transportation and utility assets in Indiana are vulnerable to fluvial erosion hazards due to close proximity to actively migrating streams. Locations of transportation assets (bridges, roadways, and railroad lines) and selected utility assets (high-capacity overhead power-transmission lines, underground pipelines, water treatment facilities, and in-channel dams) were determined using aerial imagery hosted by the Google Earth platform. Identified assets were aggregated by stream reach, county, and class. The contents of this data release include (1) a comma-delimited...

This dataset describes storm event loads (sediment and total particulate phosphorus), hydrologic metrics, and precipitation characteristics for storm events occurring between 2010-2012. Loads were estimated for four watersheds included in a paired watershed study; a forested reference watershed and three urban watersheds with centralized or decentralized stormwater management in Clarksburg, Maryland USA or Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Storm event loads were estimated from surrogate relations between turbidity and the water quality parameter of interest. Hydrologic metrics were determined for each storm event using the USGS stream gage instantaneous discharge record for each watershed. Precipitation event characteristics...

The data were gathered as a preliminary assessment of soil microbiology and conditions in selected urban stormwater best management practices (BMPs) in Clarksburg, MD. Four bioretention facilities (BF), four dry ponds (DP), and four surface sand filters (SSF) were selected. Three samples were taken from each BMP (a single sample from one dry swale (DS) was also collected). BMPs were selected based on their position along various stormwater treatment trains. Soil samples were taken after precipitation events in the summer of 2015 and analyzed for various soil chemistry parameters and microbial taxonomic profiling.
