A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center observed bird flights at 7 study sites, twice weekly during two spring and two fall migration periods between April 3, 1981 and May 20, 1982. Study sites were located in south-central North Dakota in Barnes, Kidder, and Stutsman counties. The database includes flight observation's of bird species in the vicinity of power lines and transmission towers, number of birds in each flock, their reactions to power lines and transmission towers, weather conditions, and number of collisions.
The invasive sea lamprey poses a substantial threat to fish communities in the Great Lakes. Efforts to control sea lamprey populations typically involve treating tributary streams with lampricides on a recurring cycle. Elevated densities of sea lampreys in the aquatic corridor between Lakes Huron and Erie prompted managers to propose a treatment using Bayluscide®—a granular lampricide formulation that targets larval sea lamprey that reside in sediments. However, there was concern over the potential for adverse effects of this treatment on native freshwater mussels—imperiled animals that also reside in sediments. We estimated the risk of mortality and sub-lethal effects among eight species of adult and sub-adult...
During 2002−2015 we examined the causes of mortality in beachcast northern sea otters (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) collected from the coasts of Washington and Oregon states. A total of 333 moribund or dead sea otters were reported through opportunistic observations and 93 otter carcasses were collected for necropsy. Retrieved carcasses received a full diagnostic evaluation to determine cause of death when carcass condition permitted. Otter stranding reports were received from the entire Washington coast and northern Oregon coast, but carcasses located near areas populated by humans were most often in suitable condition for cause of death determination. Data in this release include basic demographic information on the...

This dataset includes locations of burros between 2016 and 2020 from two study areas where burros were located every 2 hours continuously using GPS telemetry collars for Lotek collars, and every 13 hours continuously for Vectronic Aerospace collars. Location data are from adult female burros, not males. Study areas are the Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area in Arizona, USA and the Sinbad Herd Management Area in Utah, USA. Some burro location data from the Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area were collected by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, covering the same time period and methods as USGS-collected data.
There is growing interest in the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a management tool for controlling invasive fishes. However, there is limited published data on susceptibility of many commonly encountered species to elevated CO2 concentrations. Our objective was to estimate the 24-h LC50 and LC95 of four fishes (Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, Common Carp Cyprinus Carpio, Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus, and Westslope Cutthroat Trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi). In the laboratory, we exposed fingerlings to a range of levels of CO2 for 24-h in unpressurized, flow-through tanks. A Bayesian hierarchical model was developed to estimate the dose response relationship for each species of fish with associated uncertainty,...

These data were compiled to help understand how climate change may impact dryland pinyon-juniper ecosystems in coming decades, and how resource management might be able to minimize those impacts. Objective(s) of our study were to model the demographic rates of PJ woodlands to estimate the areas that may decline in the future vs. those that will be stable. We quantified populations growth rates across broad geographic areas, and identified the relative roles of recruitment and mortality in driving potential future changes in population viability in 5 tree species that are major components of these dry forests. We used this demographic model to project pinyon-juniper population stability under future climate conditions,...

We studied factors affecting separation of feral horse foals from their mothers and foal mortality, including variables such as group changes by the mother and behavior of the foal. We include data on feral horse foals that died or were separated, and their siblings. We conducted this study between 2017 and 2020 at two Herd Management Areas (HMAs) in western Utah, USA: Conger and Frisco. We conducted demographic observations year round at both HMAs to record group composition and foaling rate. We additionally recorded behavioral observations for a subset of foals at Conger HMA annually between March and September. This dataset includes 2 .csv files: Data_foals_dead_separated_siblings.csv - These data contain 52...

This database contains demographic and movement variables for 158 adult Agassiz's desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) translocated from the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, in the central Mojave Desert, California, in spring of 2008 and monitored through fall of 2018. The tortoises, fitted with radio transmitters, were translocated to plots south of Fort Irwin and followed monthly until fall of 2018, when transmittered were removed, and the project was ended. The database consists of unique identification numbers of the tortoises, sex and size, dates, details of locations, and status of the tortoises. These data support the following publication: Mack, J.S. and Berry, K.H., 2023. Drivers of survival...

These data consist of environmental covariates and estimated plot-level mortality of ponderosa pine trees. Environmental covariates include growing season temperature and soil moisture, and values are summarized into long-term mean conditions, and anomalies observed between forest inventory sampling events for each plot. Data also include plot locations (with uncertainty introduced by the US Forest Service to maintain private property rights), plot basal area, and several variables related to estimated mortality rate of ponderosa pine trees under various assumptions about basal area conditions.

We investigated the cultureable bacterial communities in the native freshwater mussel faunal in the Clinch River, VA/TN during mussel mortality events in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and examine the spatial and temporal distribution of bacterial genera among Pheasantshells and six other unionid species.
Morbillivirus epidemics in marine mammals first gained prominence in 1988 when an outbreak of phocine distemper virus (PDV) occurred in European harbor seals (Phoca vitulina vitulina). Prior to 2001, all serosurveys for morbilliviruses in sea otters (Enhydra lutris) in California, Washington and Alaska documented a 0% seroprevalence. The first published serodetections of morbillivirus in sea otters occurred in 2001–2002 in live-captured Washington sea otters with a documented 80% seroprevalence. We conducted a retrospective study of sea otter cases from 1989–2010 compiled at the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center to identify cases of morbilliviral disease in Washington sea otters, and to characterize...
During 2015, beachcast bird survey programs (Beach Watch and BeachCOMBERS) reported higher than average deposition of common murres (Uria aalge) on central and northern California beaches from August through December. Increased common murre mortality was not reported for southern California beaches. International Bird Rescue (IBR) located in Fairfield, CA and other coastal wildlife rehabilitation centers received more than 1,000 live, stranded and debilitated murres from Sonoma County to San Luis Obispo County during August – October. Approximately 2/3 of birds admitted to IBR were after-hatch-year birds in emaciated body condition and in various stages of molt, with extremely worn plumage. To determine the probable...
