Hanging garden plant communities form at seeps on cliffs. A given community may include common riparian species, disjunct populations, and species endemic to hanging gardens. What structures hanging harden communities, and how they respond to disturbance are poorly understood. In 1989, fireworks ignited a hanging garden in Knowles Cañon, destroying aboveground vegetation. Permanent plots were established in July 1993 to monitor changes in vegetation and soil biota. Revegetation of the garden has been limited to grasses, forbs, and ferns where water was present at the soil surface, and shrubs and trees sprouting from surviving rootstocks. Water drips from the overhanging cliff in the central area, where plant cover...

Parks throughout the West are being faced with increasing air pollution threats from current or proposed industries near their boundaries. For this reason, it is important to understand the effects these industries may have on desert ecosystems. Rock lichens can be excellent biomonitors, acting as early warning systems of impending damage to other components of the desert ecosystem. Cryptogamic crusts, consisting mostly of cyanobacteria and lichens, may not only be excellent bioindicators, but also are an essential part of the desert ecosystem. Their presence is critical for soil stability as well as for the contribution of nitrogen to the ecosystem in a form available to higher plants. Air pollutants, such as emissions...
Knowledge about the condition of vegetation cover and composition is critical for assessing the structure and function of ecosystems. To effectively quantify the impacts of a rapidly changing environment, methods to track long-term trends of vegetation must be precise, repeatable, and time- and cost-efficient. Measuring vegetation cover and composition in arid and semiarid regions is especially challenging because vegetation is typically sparse, discontinuous, and individual plants are widely spaced. To meet the goal of long-term vegetation monitoring in the Sonoran Desert and other arid and semiarid regions, we determined how estimates of plant species, total vegetation, and soil cover obtained using a widely-implemented...

The National Park Service recognizes the importance of preserving, conserving, and protecting water resources within its boundaries. Water resources, whether as large as the Colorado River or as small as a seep in Ernie's Country of Canyonlands National Park, play a distinctive role in linking ecosystems and , in general, provide habitat for a number of organisms. To protect park water resources, the Natinoal Park Service initiated a Water REsources Planning Program in 1991. The planning program provides an essential step in developing a comprehensive understanding of a park's hydrological system and the complex resource issues which surround it. The planning program includes several products including Water Resource...
Bats utilizing water sources within plateau forests were surveyed at 24 sites in southern and central Utah. Fourteen taxa were captured, with eight of these formerly listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Category 2 species. The first documented capture of Euderma maculatum from the Manti-LaSal Mountains is noted. Published in Proceedings of the Third Biennial Conference of Research on the Colorado Plateau, in 1996.

From 1988-1991, I studied desert rodent communities of the Canyon Country Province, Colorado Plateau. Study areas were located in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah and represented grassland, shrubland, and woodland habitats. I examined species richness, guild structure, body size, and microhabitat use, testing predictions based on patterns documented in other North American desert rodent faunas. Rodent assemblages were relatively simple with respect to species richness and number of taxonomic/foraging guilds. Among coexisting species, only the numerically dominant omnivores exhibited non-random body size. Co-occurences of species representing three taxonomic-foraging guilds were significantly different from expected...

Staff at Bryce Canyon National Park conducted noise monitoring surveys from 30 May to 31 August 1995 at five sites using the 15-second Leq method. Noise levels from helicopters, planes, jets, and other mechanical means, as well as natural or background noise were monitored. Aircraft were heard park-wide an average 18.8% of the time with an average of 36.4 decibels. Site-specific information is presented on peak decibel levels, average noise levels, and number of aircraft overflights. Published in Proceedings of the Third Biennial Conference of Research on the Colorado Plateau, in 1996.
