This layer has been updated in 2016 This shapefile represents the watersheds present within the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem (CCE) boundary.(Note: a different CCE boundary layer was used at the time of creation, so the area amounts within the CCE may not be accurate)This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the landscape scale. The CMP is collaborative group of land managers, scientists, and stakeholder in the CCE. During summer 2019, botanists with the Maine Natural Areas Program collected data from 94 vegetation plots for plant community characterization. The sampling data were entered into the National Park Service PLOTS version 4.0 (National Park Service 2018) for analyses to characterize vegetation associations in the U.S. National Vegetation Classification. An accuracy assessment was performed on the draft version of the vegetation map layer. During the summer of 2020, field crews collected data from 107 stratified and randomly selected sites for evaluating the accuracy of the vegetation map layer for those map classes representing U.S. National Vegetation Classification associations. The accuracy assessment field data...

The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Seboeis Unit Vegetation Mapping Project was initiated in the fall of 2019 by a grant through the USGS Natural Resource Preservation Program to classify and map vegetation types of the Seboeis Unit thereby providing resource managers and biological researchers with useful baseline vegetation information. The Study Area Boundary (SAB) for this project is similar to, but not exactly the same as, the official boundary for the Seboeis Unit. Because of uncertainty on the exact location of the Seboeis Unit boundary, mapping may have occurred beyond the official boundary. Additionally, this SAB is based upon the Seboeis Unit boundary as it appeared in September of 2019.

The 1966 polygons included in this data release represent the main body portion of the 37 named glaciers of Glacier National Park (GNP) and 2 named glaciers on the U.S. Forest Service’s Flathead National Forest land. This is a subset of the original mapping effort derived from 1:24000 scale mapping of named glaciers and permanent snowfields within Glacier National Park, Montana which were digitized by Richard Menicke (Glacier National Park) and Carl Key (U.S. Geological Survey) in 1993. These data are based on USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle mapping published from 1966 through 1968 which were the result of the earliest park-wide aerial surveys of snow and ice features in GNP. Examination of the aerial photographs shows...

Our primary goal for this dataset was to obtain the population and number of dwellings at the finest common scale possible. Because the Canadian government first began to collect the pertinent census information at our desired scale in 2006, we used 2006 as the baseline for this product on the Canadian CCE. However, because (1) U.S. Census takes place every 10 years, and (2) our desired baseline date for the protocol was 2000, the census 2000 blocks were used on the U.S. CCE. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the...

In 1967 and 1968 the USGS, in partnership with NASA and the National Park Service, extracted rock core from 13 locations in Yellowstone National Park. Depths of the holes ranged from 215 ft to 1,088 ft and the total drilled footage was 6,802 ft. The deepest hole was drilled in Norris Basin. Research on these cores provided critical understanding of complex geothermal systems that would inform the potential development of other systems, external to the park, as energy sources. These cores are extremely rare due to the many restrictions on sampling in the park. Years later, the cores were used to investigate the origin of some of Yellowstone supervolcano’s lavas using techniques that did not even exist when the cores...
Protected lands within the Mississippi River Basin (MRB).The USGS Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is the nation's inventory of protected areas, including public open space and voluntarily provided, private protected areas, identified as an A-16 National Geospatial Data Asset in the Cadastral Theme (http://www.fgdc.gov/ngda-reports/NGDA_Datasets.html). PAD-US is an ongoing project with several published versions of a spatial database of areas dedicated to the preservation of biological diversity, and other natural, recreational or cultural uses, managed for these purposes through legal or other effective means. The geodatabase maps and describes public open space and other protected areas....

The 24-acre Jaite Paper Mill site is located on a natural floodplain at the confluence of the Cuyahoga River and Brandywine Creek at Brecksville, Ohio. The Mill Site is immediately adjacent to the popular Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Originally constructed in 1905, the Mill was operated continuously until 1984, by which time the size of the plant had grown to 180,000 square feet. In 1985, the Mill became part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Fire in October 1992 severely damaged a large part of the plant. After this fire, the plant began deteriorating rapidly and became increasingly dangerous to park staff and visitors. The demolition and removal of the Mill was intended to eliminate a human health and...

This data release consists of a time series of digitized glacier margins for the 37 named glaciers of Glacier National Park (GNP) and two glaciers on U.S. Forest Service’s Flathead National Forest land. The polygons represent the main body portion of each glacier as analyzed from aerial imagery from the years 1966, 1998, 2005 and 2015. Disconnected patches are not included as this dataset represents only the main body features of the named glaciers in GNP and environs. File attributes list specific source imagery.

High-resolution geophysical mapping of Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah and Arizona was conducted between October 8 and November 15, 2017, as part of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Reclamation to provide high-quality data needed to reassess the area-capacity tables for the Lake Powell reservoir. Seismic data collected during this survey can help to define the rates of deposition within the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, which are the main inflows to Lake Powell. These new data are intended to improve water budget management decisions that affect the natural and recreational resources of the reservoir. Multibeam echosounder bathymetry and...

The 2016 Food Storage Order (FSO) boundary layer depicts those areas on Federal lands within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) where legal requirements pertaining to safe storage, possession, and handling of food and other grizzly bear attractants are implemented. FSOs give Forest Supervisors and National Park Superintendents the authority to close or restrict the use of designated areas under their jurisdiction in order to minimize human/grizzly bear conflicts. As of 2016, FSOs are prescribed on 98% of all Forest and Park Service lands inside the grizzly bear demographic monitoring area of the GYE. FSOs help facilitate connectivity between the Yellowstone grizzly bear and adjacent populations by minimizing...

Current as of April 4, 2013:This geodatabase contains all freely available spatial information on surface wellsites related to energy resources in the Crown of the Continent area. Due to the free nature of the data, it is of mixed quality and should not be considered inclusive of all wellsites actually in the region. Some wells may possess a “Cancelled” status and lack a drilled hole but may still represent a clearing made for the once planned activity.Alberta Source: current as of September 2009; Montana Source: 1998-2000 (Ground water wells: 2009); and British Columbia Source: 2007-2008.
