These data map in high detail surficial cross-sections of North Core Banks, a barrier island in Cape Lookout National Seashore, NC, in October 2022. U.S. Geological Survey field efforts are part of an interagency agreement with the National Park Service to monitor the recovery of the island from Hurricanes Florence (2018) and Dorian (2019). Three sites of outwash, overwash, and pond formation were targeted for extensive vegetation ground-truthing, sediment samples, bathymetric mapping with a remote-controlled surface vehicle, and uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) flights to collect multispectral imagery. Five semi-permanent ground control points were also installed and surveyed to act as control for additional aerial...

This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the landscape scale. The CMP is collaborative group of land managers, scientists, and stakeholder in the CCE. For more information on the CMP and its collaborators, programs, and projects please visit: http://crownmanagers.org/. This dataset was first published in May 2016. Our primary goal for this dataset was to obtain the population and number of dwellings at the finest common scale possible. Because the Canadian government first began to collect the pertinent census information at our desired scale in 2006, we used 2006 as the baseline for this product on the Canadian CCE. However, because (1) U.S. Census takes place every 10 years, and (2) our desired baseline date for the protocol was 2000, the census 2000 blocks were used on the U.S. CCE. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the...

In 1967 and 1968 the USGS, in partnership with NASA and the National Park Service, extracted rock core from 13 locations in Yellowstone National Park. Depths of the holes ranged from 215 ft to 1,088 ft and the total drilled footage was 6,802 ft. The deepest hole was drilled in Norris Basin. Research on these cores provided critical understanding of complex geothermal systems that would inform the potential development of other systems, external to the park, as energy sources. These cores are extremely rare due to the many restrictions on sampling in the park. Years later, the cores were used to investigate the origin of some of Yellowstone supervolcano’s lavas using techniques that did not even exist when the cores...

The USGS Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is the nation's inventory of protected areas, including public land and voluntarily provided private protected areas, identified as an A-16 National Geospatial Data Asset in the Cadastre Theme ( https://ngda-cadastre-geoplatform.hub.arcgis.com/ ). The PAD-US is an ongoing project with several published versions of a spatial database including areas dedicated to the preservation of biological diversity, and other natural (including extraction), recreational, or cultural uses, managed for these purposes through legal or other effective means. The database was originally designed to support biodiversity assessments; however, its scope expanded in recent...
A previously developed three-dimensional groundwater-flow model that used the MODFLOW-NWT code was updated to simulate the effects of various proposed drainage modifications aimed at reducing discharge to a sanitary sewer system near Long Lake in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, near Gary, Indiana. The original steady-state model documented in the USGS report (https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2013/5003/) and data release (https://doi.org/10.5066/F7D21VS2) was calibrated to a low groundwater level/dry weather condition of October 2002 and a high groundwater level/wet weather condition of March 2011. For this study the 2002 and 2011 simulations were updated with elevation data collected from a 2017 survey of primary surface-water...

Current as of April 4, 2013:This geodatabase contains all freely available spatial information on surface wellsites related to energy resources in the Crown of the Continent area. Due to the free nature of the data, it is of mixed quality and should not be considered inclusive of all wellsites actually in the region. Some wells may possess a “Cancelled” status and lack a drilled hole but may still represent a clearing made for the once planned activity.Alberta Source: current as of September 2009; Montana Source: 1998-2000 (Ground water wells: 2009); and British Columbia Source: 2007-2008.

These data are daily climate, water balance, and soil moisture data for 270 plots in the National Park Service (NPS) Southern Colorado Plateau Network (SCPN) Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) network. Climate data was collected from a gridded, daily climate dataset, Daymet (https://daymet.ornl.gov/). Climate, alongside field-collected soils (SoilDepthsByPlot.csv) and vegetation information, were then used to drive a point based, daily, multi soil-layer, ecosystem water-balance model, SOILWAT2 (https://github.com/DrylandEcology/SOILWAT2). SCPN plots were established to capture the range of ecosystem conditions present in this network. Plant communities of the SCPN are a vital sign for this region, enhancing habitat, stabilizing...

Dye tracing investigations were conducted in Cades Cove and Tuckaleechee Cove, two carbonate fensters in the western Great Smoky Mountains. These investigations were conducted as part of a two-year study examining the karst hydrology in the carbonate fensters. Main objectives of the dye tracing investigations were to determine resurgences for cave systems, delineate recharge areas for major springs, and to compare travel times from sink (dye injection point) to resurgence (monitoring site) for the two coves. Over the two-year study period (2017-2018), four different rounds of dye injections were completed, and each round had four dye injection locations, with the exception of the fourth round in September 2018,...

Seabeach amaranth (Amaranthus pumilus) is a plant species that was once prevalent on beaches of the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast but is now listed as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For much of the 20th century, seabeach amaranth was absent from the mid-Atlantic coast and thought to be extinct, presumably as a result of increased development and recreational pressure. One region where there has been an effort to restore the seabeach amaranth population is Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS), a National Park Service land holding located along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. Here, the Natural Resources staff at ASIS planted seabeach amaranth cultivars for three growing seasons from 1999...
For the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem (CCE), the riparian ecosystem was classified using three existing layers: I) a streams network, II) a water class of the landcover layer, and III) a 22 meter digital elevation model (DEM).NOTE: There were minor issues with data integrity, as the water class of the landcover layer and the streams layer were not mutually exclusive: it was found that lakes were often represented as streams. (i) Stream network was rasterized (Polyline to Raster tool) after the features were dossolved. (ii) Rasters from each of the streams and lake classes are added together for full hydrology. Riparian classification systems are based typically on two to three characteristics, depending on the...

The data in this release map Marconi Beach, Head of the Meadow Beach, and Nauset Light Beach, in Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), Massachusetts, before and after Hurricane Lee in September 2023. U.S Geological Survey personnel conducted field surveys to collect topographic data using global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) at all three beaches. In addition, at Nauset Light Beach, an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) was used to collect images with a Ricoh GRII camera for use in structure from motion photogrammetry. High-precision GNSS targets (AeroPoints) were used as ground control points (GCPs) for the UAS photogrammetry. Agisoft Metashape (v. 2.0.1) software was used to create a digital surface model and an orthomosaic...
