The US Geological Survey Chesapeake Bay Watershed Land Cover Data Series, 2011 edition, (CBLCD-e11) consists of Level I Land Cover data for the years 1984, 1992, 2001, 2006 and 2011. It consists of a series of five 8-bit unsigned integer raster data files of 30 meter spatial resolution in Albers Conic Equal Area projection, NAD83 datum. The 1984 – 2006 data layers were created by aggregating most Level II Anderson classes of the USGS CBLCD Land Cover Data Series released in 2010 (Irani and Claggett, 2010).
This data set contains shoreline rate of change statistics for New York State coastal wetlands. Analysis was performed using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), created by U.S. Geological Survey, version 5.0, an extension for ArcMap. A reference baseline was used as the originating point for orthogonal transects cast by the DSAS software. The transects intersect each polyline vector shoreline establishing intersection measurement points, which were then used to calculate the rates of change. End-point rates, calculated by dividing the distance of shoreline movement by the time elapsed between the oldest and the most recent shoreline, were generated for wetlands where fewer than three historic shorelines...

Digital flood-inundation maps for a 2.4-mile reach of the Schoharie Creek in North Blenheim, New York, were created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New York Power Authority. The flood-inundation maps, which can be accessed through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Science web site at https://fim.wim.usgs.gov/fim/, depict estimates of the areal extent and depth of flooding corresponding to selected water levels (stages) at the USGS streamgage on the Schoharie Creek near North Blenheim, NY (station number 01350212). Flood profiles were computed for the stream reach by means of a two-dimensional implicit finite volume hydraulic model. The model was calibrated using the active (as of April,...

Taxonomic composition of environmental DNA acquired by filtration from the St. Regis River, New York
Environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys have become important tools for monitoring aquatic biodiversity. Barcode sequencing of eDNA generates community profiles that, while potentially biased in both capture and amplification, can nonetheless yield high information content per unit cost. While factors affecting eDNA capture and amplification have been heavily studied, watershed-scale assessments of fish communities and our confidence in such have been less frequent. We performed an initial watershed-scale characterization of fish eDNA using rapid, low-volume filtering with replicate and control samples scaled for a single Illumina MiSeq flow cell, using the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA locus for taxonomic profiling....
This data set contains rate of shoreline change statistics for New York State coastal wetlands. Analysis was performed in ArcMap 10.5.1 using historical vector shoreline data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Rate of change statistics were calculated using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), created by U.S. Geological Survey, version 5.0. End-point rates, presented here, calculated by dividing the distance of shoreline movement by the time elapsed between the oldest and the most recent shoreline, were generated for wetlands where fewer than three historic shorelines were available. Linear regression rates, determined by fitting a least-squares regression line to all shoreline...

In this study, organic petrology and Osmium isotope (187Os/188Os) stratigraphy, major and trace element, and programmed pyrolysis analysis were performed on five outcrop samples from western New York, USA. Seawater Os isotope composition is controlled by radiogenic input from weathering of the ancient land and nonradiogenic input from extraterrestrial and hydrothermal sources (Peucker-Ehrenbrink and Ravizza, 2000). Os is complexed by the organic matter present at the time of deposition without isotope fractionation. Seawater Os isotope composition is reconstructed by analysing the Os isotope composition of the organic-rich sedimentary rock (Turgeon et al., 2007). The short residence time of Os (10 – 50 kyrs) in...

This data release documents streambed sediment thickness in the Neversink watershed (NY) as determined by field observations and HVSR passive seismic measurements, and were collected as an extension of a previous data set collected in the same watershed (see Associated Items). These measurements were made between May 17, 2021 and May 21, 2021 using MOHO Tromino three-component seismometers (MOHO, S.R.L.). Seismic observations were converted to sediment thickness (depth to bedrock, meters) using the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method. Resonance frequencies were determined from time domain data using GRILLA (MOHO, S.R.L.) software and converted to inferred depth to bedrock for a range of possible...

This child item model archive summary documents a surrogate regression model to estimate suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) at the Mohawk River above State Highway 30A at Fonda, New York. (U.S. Geological Survey station number 01349527). The methods used follow USGS guidance in relevant Office of Surface Water/Office of Water Quality Technical Memoranda and USGS Techniques and Methods, book 3, chap. 4 (Rasmussen and others, 2009). Thirty-nine concurrent measurements of SSC and turbidity, collected from June 12, 2015, through May 28, 2020, were used in the model calibration dataset. Samples were collected across 94 percent of the range in observed discharge and 24 percent of the range in observed turbidity during...

In support of a preliminary analysis performed by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) that found elevated nutrient levels along selected reaches of the Mohawk River, one-dimensional, unsteady, hydraulic and water-quality models using HEC-RAS and HEC-RAS Nutrient Simulation Module I (version 5.0.3) were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for the 127-mile reach of the Mohawk River between Rome and Cohoes, New York. The models were designed to accurately simulate within-channel flow conditions for this highly regulated, control structure dense river reach. The models were calibrated for the study period of May through September 2016 using best available streamflow, temperature,...

Fish mercury (Hg) data were compiled for 392 unique locations on freshwater streams and rivers in New York State for the period 1969-2016. A total of 7620 records were compiled from state, federal, and non-governmental organization databases. The compiled data were for samples of 65 non-anadromous species or species groups in which Hg was analyzed in whole fish or edible flesh, and for which sufficient ancillary data were available for interpretation. This data release provides total Hg concentrations on a wet weight basis, ancillary sample data (e.g., fish length, body part analyzed), collection location information (description, latitude, longitude), and source of original data. The data release also contains...
