This package contains 13 polygon layers representing baseline and predicted future climate niches (2050s & 2080s) of Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). The modeling algorithm Maxent and the Worldclim predictor set have been used to compute niche projections under two emission scenarios (A1B & A2A) based on three general circulation models (CSIRO, CCCMA & HADCM3). The shapefiles are derived from gridded model outputs with a grid cell resolution of 30 arc-seconds.

The Interagency Vegetation Mapping Project (IVMP) provides maps of existing vegetation, canopy cover, size, and cover type for the entire range of the Northern Spotted Owl using satellite imagery from the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM). This area is commonly called the FEMAT area, in reference to the area's analysis by the Forest Ecosystem Management Assessment Team. A regression modeling approach was used to predict vegetation characteristics from this Landsat data. This process involved the use of numerous sources of ancillary data, the most crucial being USFS, BLM, and Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plot field data and plot photo interpreted information. This data served as training data in the regression...

This study addressed the challenges faced by natural resource management planning in the context of climate change. We explored how future climate may interact with management alternatives to shape wildlife habitat across large landscapes. We studied habitat for the northern spotted owl in coastal Washington and southwestern Oregon, and habitat for the greater sage-grouse in southeastern Oregon. In coastal Washington, the primary threat to owl habitat is likely to be habitat loss as a result of increasing fire and shifts in vegetation with changing climate. These threats may not be fully mitigated with management. In southwest Oregon, increasing fire frequencies under climate change are also likely to pose the greatest...
Synopsis: Classical demographic methods applied to life history data on the northern spotted owl yield an estimate of the annual geometric rate of increase for the population of λ = 0.96 ± 0.03, which is not significantly different from that for a stable population (λ = 1.00). Sensitivity analysis indicates that adult annual survivorship has by far the largest influence on λ, followed by the probability that juveniles survive dispersal, and the adult annual fecundity. Substantial temporal fluctuations in demographic parameters have little effect on the long-run growth rate of the population because of the long adult life expectancy. A model of dispersal and territory occupancy that assumes demographic equilibrium...

This dataset represents areas in Oregon (USA) with potential high suitability for northern spotted owls. This dataset is not intended to accurately characterize high-quality northern spotted owl habitat, but instead serves as a means of distilling the more complex information depicted in the northern spotted owl habitat suitability layers published by the Northwest Forest Plan (NFP) - Interagency Regional Monitoring Program (Lint 2005) used to create this dataset. The Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) developed this layer through a series of post-processing steps. Areas of high suitability (90-100%) were identified in the NFP habitat suitability layer. These areas were then filtered and smoothed using a 125 meter...
This dataset includes anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) screening results of 40 Barred Owls (Strix varia) collected in forested landscapes of Washington and Oregon from 2015-2017. Liver tissue was collected from each owl and screened for exposure to eight AR compounds, including 4 first-generation ARs (warfarin, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and coumachlor), and 4 second-generation ARs (brodifacoum, bromadionlone, difethialone, and difenacoum). Additionally, this dataset includes geographic, temporal, environmental, and biological attributes of individual owls that were identified as potential sources of variation in AR exposure and/or useful measurements for assessing AR exposure risk of sympatric northern spotted...

US Fish and Wildlife Service Critical Habitat Units for Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murrelet for Oregon, Washington and California
This dataset depicts Late-Successional Reserves associated with known (as of January 1, 1994) spotted owl activity centers in Matrix and Adaptive Management Areas. The criteria for mapping these areas are identified on pages C-10 and C-11 of the Northwest Forest Plan Standards and Guidelines (See supplemental Info.). Supplemental direction to the administrative units in BLM IM OR-2003-001 directed the designation of the 100-acre areas by delineating the stand of trees containing the center of activity as identified in the Spotted Owl Database and additional Habitat 1 or 2 in the vicinity until approximately 100 acres were delineated. If there was insufficient Habitat 1 or 2 to meet the acreage target, then the next...
