This project uses bottom-up modeling at a parcel scale to measure the effects of sea-level rise (SLR) on coastal ecosystems and tidal salt marshes. At selected tidal marshes, the project team will measure several parameters that will be incorporated into ArcGIS models creating comparable datasets across the Pacific coast tidal gradient with a focus on 2-4 sites in the California LCC (e.g. San Diego, San Francisco Bay Refuges). Fire in the western U.S. poses one of the greatest threats to human and ecological communities alike. In fact, fire management is the largest single expenditure of land management funds on federal lands. Now, climate change is altering wildfire patterns. Climate change in the West is creating warmer and drier conditions, resulting in an increase in the amount of dead vegetation available to fuel fires. The Conservation Efforts Database (CED) is in the process of collecting information related to conservation efforts implemented in the sagebrush biome. This data will predominantly covers the time from 2009-2018. It is our hope to utilize this information and partner with USGS to investigate if/how these efforts are related to greater sage-grouse population trends being developed as part of a larger Population Monitoring Framework that FWS is involved with. Biodiversity is declining worldwide, and this trend could potentially become more severe as climate conditions change. An integral component of proactive adaptive management planning requires forecasts of how changes in climate will affect individual species. The intent of this project was to create a directory of academic climate change scientists that focus on the North Pacific Coast of North America—including California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alaska. The University of Washington developed the California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho portion of the directory and Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center developed the British Columbia and Alaska portion of the directory. Climate adaptation planning seeks to identify and proactively prepare for potential climate change impacts on management sectors. Taking a proactive approach can help reduce future risks, capitalize on new opportunities, and minimize losses due to climate change. The North Pacific Forest Landscape Corridor and Connectivity Project utilized a landscape connectivity simulator (UNICOR) and a genetic simulation program (CDPOP) to model the functional (dispersal and genetic) connectivity in the North Pacific Landscape. The outputs from these programs indicated areas with high potential for landscape and genetic isolation and low probability of dispersal and colonization.
