This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper: Anna, L.O., 1986, Geologic framework of the ground water system in Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks on the Northern Great Plains, in parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1402-B, 36 p. A lineament is defined as a linear topographic feature of regional extent that is believed to reflect crustal structure (Hobbs et al., 1976, p. 267). Lineament features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Lineaments...

The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Yukon Flats Assessment Area is located in east-central Alaska, encompassing part of Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area County in Alaska. The main population centers within the study area are Fort Yukon, Venetie, Stevens Village, and Beaver, Alaska. The main highways, State Route 4 and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System crosses the western...

These data represent major fault zones as indicated on Plate 2, Principal structural features, Gulf of Mexico Basin (compiled by T.E. Ewing and R.F. Lopez) in volume J, The Geology of North America (1991). This dataset contains basic data and interpretations developed and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey's Framework Studies and Assessment of the Gulf Coast Project. Other major sources of data include publicly available information from state agencies as well as publications of the U.S. Geological Survey and other scientific organizations. In cases where company proprietary data were used to produce various derivatives such as contour surfaces, the source is cited but the data are not displayed.

The polygons representing fields were created by constructing a grid of ¼ sq. mi. cells and proximal polygons centered on all wells in southern Louisiana and then combining and merging the adjacent polygons having the same value for field name. The wells data used to create these fields in southern Louisiana were obtained from a public database provided by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (LDNR), Office of Conservation. This dataset contains basic data and interpretations developed and compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey's Framework Studies and Assessment of the Gulf Coast Project. Other major sources of data include publicly available information from state agencies as well as publications of the...

Tar sands represent a significant source of hydrocarbons in the United States. Also known by several other names including bitumen-bearing rocks, natural asphalt, tarry oil, bituminous rock, oil sands and rock asphalt, these rocks are mostly located on the margins of sedimentary basins. Maps of tar sands and deposits were digitized to illustrate their distribution and extent within the Total Petroleum System.

The thickness contours were created using biostratigraphic data in the Paleo-Data, Inc., Tenroc Regional Geologic Database. The depths of the microfossil locations were associated with the wells data provided by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources. Because of the proprietary nature of the Tenroc database, no actual data can be shown and only those data points contained in the Louisiana State wells database are included in the control points layer. Contouring was accomplished in Dynamic Graphics, Inc., EarthVision modeling software (v.5) using minimum tension gridding. Three custom programs were used to convert contour lines generated from grids in EarthVision to Arc/Info coverages and then to shapefiles....

South America is part of Region 6 (Central and South America) for the World Energy Assessment. South America was divided into 107 geologic provinces as background for prioritization and assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The boundaries of geologic provinces are required for the assessment as oil and gas. Data must be allocated to a geographic entity so that decisions can be made as to which provinces are priority for the assessment. Many sources of geologic information were used to define the province boundaries in South America, and several versions of the map were reviewed. Of the 107 geologic provinces defined in South America, about 40 have had some oil and gas production to date.

Monte Carlo programs described in chapter MC, Monte Carlo Simulation Method. Emc2.xls was the program used to calculate the estimates of undiscovered resources for the World Petroleum Assessment 2000. The emcee.xls program is a more generalized version of the program, with options for different distribution types. Directions for the use of both programs are fully documented in chapter MC.

Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The well information was initially retrieved from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data on CD-ROM, which is a proprietary, commercial database containing information for most oil and gas wells in the U.S. Cells were...
