This data was developed to show the allowable leasing footprints for oil shale extraction in the Uinta Basin of Utah in support of the Oil Shale / Tar Sands Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (OSTS PEIS) being developed for the Bureau of Land Management. It was developed by starting with land owned by the federal government, including certain split-estate lands (those with sub-surface mineral rights), and removing areas restricted to oil shale extraction such as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs), Wild & Scenic Rivers, etc. The resulting footprint shown in this data was used for analysis of Alternative B of the OSTS PEIS.
The Mahogany ledge structure contour lines were needed to perform overburden calculations in the Piceance Basin, Colorado as part of a 2009 National Oil Shale Assessment.

This dataset was compiled and published as a service definition for the purpose of display in an interactive web map of the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative (WLCI). The data layers selected for the dataset are a subset of the data in U.S. Geological Survey's Data Series 843, the Energy Map of Southwestern Wyoming, Part B—Oil and Gas, Oil Shale, Uranium, and Solar (2014). Data Series 843 includes a geodatabase of all the shapefiles used as data sources. These shapefiles and their metadata can be downloaded from http://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/843/contents/Datafiles/. Data Series 843 is the second and final part of the Energy Map of Southwestern Wyoming series (also see USGS Data Series 683, http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/ds/683/...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Williston Basin Province is located in North Dakota, eastern Montana, and northwestern South Dakota, encompassing all or parts of Divide, Burke, Renville, Bottineau, Rolette, Towner, Cavalier, Pembina, Walsh, Grand Forks, Nelson, Ramsey, Benson, Eddy, Foster, Wells, Griggs, Steele, Traill, Cass, Barnes, Ransom, Richland, Sergeant,...
The Laney Member and the Tipton Member of the Eocene Green River Formation outcrops were needed to limit resource calculations in the Green River and Washakie Basins, southwestern Wyoming as part of a National Oil Shale Assessment.
