This data release contains the data used to interpret the origin of the shallow lakes in the Khorezm Province, Uzbekistan, and the history of pesticide use around these lakes. The data include 1) lake sediment core data for age dating (cesium-137 and lead-210) for 12 lakes in Uzbekistan, 2) lake sediment core data for loss on ignition (LOI550)for determining organic carbon content of 12 lakes in Uzbekistan, 3) plant pollen occurrence and abundance from lake sediment cores for 6 lakes in Uzbekistan and 4) lake sediment core data for pesticide occurrence of DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and its degradates and γ-HCH (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) for 12 lakes in Uzbekistan, The interpretation of these data will...

Isotopic and elemental records of authigenic calcite from lacustrine deposits in the intraforeland basins of Utah were analyzed in an effort to reconstruct the regional paleoclimate, paleohydrology, and paleotopography of the early Cenozoic central North American Cordillera. Isotopic profiles for Paleogene Lakes Uinta, Flagstaff, and Claron show relatively large oxygen isotopic shifts that are diachronous among basins with an ~7{per thousand} decrease in {delta}18Ocalcite values at ca. 45 Ma in Lake Flagstaff, an ~5{per thousand} decrease in {delta}18Ocalcite values between ca. 42 and 35 Ma in Lake Claron, and an ~6{per thousand} decrease in {delta}18Ocalcite values between ca. 44 and 43 Ma in Lake Uinta. We interpret...

Recent sediments from two alpine lakes (> 3300 m asl) in the Colorado Front Range (USA) register marked and near-synchronous changes that are believed to represent ecological responses to enhanced atmospheric deposition of fixed nitrogen from anthropogenic sources. Directional shifts in sediment proxies include greater representations of mesotrophic diatoms and increasingly depleted d15N values. These trends are particularly pronounced since ~ 1950, and appear to chronicle lake responses to excess N derived from agricultural and industrial sources to the east. The rate and magnitude of recent ecological changes far exceed the context of natural variability, as inferred from comparative analyses of a long core capturingthe...

Understanding climate change and its potential impact on species, populations and communities is one of the most pressing questions of twenty-first-century conservation planning. Palaeobiogeographers working on Cenozoic fossil records and other lines of evidence are producing important insights into the dynamic nature of climate and the equally dynamic response of species, populations and communities. Climatic variations ranging in length from multimillennia to decades run throughout the palaeo-records of the Quaternary and earlier Cenozoic and have been shown to have had impacts ranging from changes in the genetic structure and morphology of individual species, population sizes and distributions, community composition...

We asked whether 3?5 kg N y?1 atmospheric N deposition was sufficient to have influenced natural, otherwise undisturbed, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of the Colorado Front Range by comparing ecosystem processes and properties east and west of the Continental Divide. The eastern side receives elevated N deposition from urban, agricultural, and industrial sources, compared with 1?2 kg N y?1 on the western side. Foliage of east side old-growth Englemann spruce forests have significantly lower C:N and lignin:N ratios and greater N:Mg and N:P ratios. Soil % N is higher, and C:N ratios lower in the east side stands, and potential net N mineralization rates are greater. Lake NO3 concentrations are significantly higher...
