This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains meteorological, water temperature, light (photosynthetically active radiation and illumination), and multichannel fluorescence sensor data from the Finger Lakes Region of New York, during the fall of 2018 and the summer and fall of 2019 and 2020. It also includes all sensor data and associated discrete sample data, at the near surface (top), mid-depth (middle) and near bottom (bottom) depths. Data were collected from three Advanced Monitoring Pilot study platforms in open water at Seneca Lake (USGS station number 425027076564401), Owasco Lake (USGS station number 425327076313601), and Skaneateles Lake (USGS station number 425606076251601) in 2018 and 2019,...

This dataset provides the estimated cell abundance and total biovolume for whole-water picoplankton samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at 25 different sites in Kansas between August of 2020 and August of 2022. The samples were analyzed by BSA Environmental Services, Inc. This data is part of a larger multi-agency project between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and USGS called the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN). The goal of the CyAN project is to develop a satellite-based, early warning system to detect harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater systems.

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides phytoplankton data collected as part of an advanced harmful algae bloom (HAB) monitoring study conducted in collaboration with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). Samples were collected biweekly in association with continuous monitoring platforms in Owasco, Seneca, and Skaneateles Lakes, Finger Lakes Region, New York and one opportunistic bloom sample site at Emerson Park Boat Launch in Owasco Lake. The platforms were deployed from May-November in 2019 and June-October in 2020. This dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected at the four sampling locations on the three lakes: three...

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

The dataset documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the North Delta, Central Delta, and the Western Delta out to Suisun Bay in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta of California, USA. The dataset includes nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll as well as information about phytoplankton community composition. Data-collection cruises were conducted under three different environmental/flow conditions in May, July, and October of 2018. The data release consists of a xml document, 13 text/csv documents, and a zip file. Descriptions for each document and...

The dimensions of each organism were measured with a Whipple grid and the biovolume was estimated using the simplest geometric shape (e.g., cylinder, cone, sphere, etc.) that best fit the shape of each taxon. Shapes were assigned according to Hillebrand et al. (1999). Biovolume was calculated for the first five organisms/counting units of each taxon identified in a sample. The average biovolume was then used to calculate total biovolume of each taxon in the sample.

Data release provides diffuse light attenuation coefficient of photosynthetically active radiation (KdPAR) derived from in-situ light measurements, along with surface water-quality and atmospheric data collected in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Rive Delta in California between January 2013 and May 2014. These associated surface level water-quality and atmospheric data, and categorical variables (for example season, region, etc.) were used to develop a KdPAR model using in situ light profile data collected in tandem, which we derived KdPAR from.

Surface water quality, water isotope, and phytoplankton enumeration data were collected to evaluate the impact of an Emergency Drought Barrier (EDB) in False River in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Data were collected on six days during 2022 and 2023 (June 7, June 21, July 27, August 9, October 12, November 30, 2022, and February 21, 2023). Sampling occurred in Franks Tract, Mildred Island, the San Joaquin River, and various sloughs and cuts connecting these water bodies. High-resolution boat-based mapping data and discrete water samples were collected and analyzed for: nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus (orthophosphate), total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus,...

Hand-held hyperspectral spectroscopy data were collected in 2022 in Franks Tract, a flooded area located in the central Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta of California. The data were collected from a boat and co-located within pixels from the Ocean Land Color Imaging (OLCI) sensor on the Sentinel-3A and 3-B satellites. Data from 16 sites within 7 OLCI pixels were collected on three days: July 14, August 3, and November 3, 2022. Radiance measurements from the water, sky, and a reflectance plaque were collected to enable calculation of water-leaving radiance (Mobley 1999, Ruddick et al. 2019). At the location of each spectroscopy site, discrete water samples were also collected and analyzed for chlorophyll a, dissolved...
