The cycles of the key nutrient elements nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have been massively altered by anthropogenic activities. Thus, it is essential to understand how photosynthetic production across diverse ecosystems is, or is not, limited by N and P. Via a large-scale meta-analysis of experimental enrichments, we show that P limitation is equally strong across these major habitats and that N and P limitation are equivalent within both terrestrial and freshwater systems. Furthermore, simultaneous N and P enrichment produces strongly positive synergistic responses in all three environments. Thus, contrary to some prevailing paradigms, freshwater, marine and terrestrial ecosystems are surprisingly similar in terms...

This data release documents the spatial and temporal variability of nutrients and related water quality parameters at high spatial resolution in the western and central portion of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta of California, USA. The data set includes water residence time, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, dissolved organic carbon, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll. Data collection were conducted over six days between August 2015 - July 2016 to document conditions prior to, during, and following the installation of a rock barrier on False Barrier to limit salt intrusion.

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data for samples collected from eleven large river sites throughout the United States, from June through October 2018. All data are reported as raw calculated values and are not rounded to USGS significant figures. The dataset includes all routine and quality assurance/quality control samples collected as part of a National Water Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers. Phytoplankton were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and abundance (reported as both natural units and cells) is reported.

Algal toxins are a growing concern worldwide. Rapid assessment test strips are a newer technology and their accuracy in detecting toxins in different lakes with different phytoplankton and toxins present is unknown. This data release is supported by our testing of toxin test strips. This research took place in Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. The research will indicate whether these test strips are accurate for this system, and hopefully lay the foundation for a cost-effective harmful algal blooms (HABs) monitoring and communication tool for Voyageurs National Park and other parks. The utility of the test strips in this system may lead to broader applications, for instance in other inland systems like...

This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release provides data collected from Nolin Lake Kentucky, during 2016 to 2017. Two types of data are reported: zooplankton and phytoplankton data are raw calculated values not rounded to USGS significant figures and continuous water-quality data collected with a multi-parameter sonde. The zooplankton, phytoplankton, and water-quality data describe a swarm of the invasive cladoceran Daphnia lumholtzi (D. lumholtzi) Sars, 1885 in a Kentucky USA reservoir during midwinter 2017.

This data release includes GIS shapefiles and metadata for location of the study area and phytoplankton taxonomy counts determined by Dr. Russel Rhodes, Faculty Emeritus, Department of Biology, Missouri State University, in three north Louisiana reservoirs: Cross Lake, Bayou D'Arbonne Lake, and Poverty Point Reservoir, June 2009-February 2011. These data and GIS coverages complement and support the findings in the companion report by Tollett and others (in review).
This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides phytoplankton data from Upper Klamath Lake, OR from 5/11/2020 - 9/30/2020 from ten sites and zooplankton data from Upper Klamath Lake, OR from 5/11/2020 - 10/14/2020 from eight sites. Phytoplankton data are reported to the lowest possible taxonomic level and biovolume, biomass, and density are reported. Zooplankton data are reported to the lowest possible taxonomic level, biomass and density are also reported.
This dataset contains a tabular file of phytoplankton abundance and community composition analysis in samples collected from eight sites in the Western Lake Erie Basin; four sites in Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan; and five sites in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron. Samples were collected and processed by the Great Lakes Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and analyzed by BSA Environmental Inc. Lake Erie sample collection spanned years 2014-2018 with some sites sampled throughout this period and other sites sampled in only some years. Sample collection in Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan and Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron occurred in 2015. Sample collection was focused in summer and early fall months and data...
The Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS), located about 28 miles northwest of New Orleans, was constructed by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the early 1930s as part of an integrated flood-control system for the lower Mississippi River (MR). The BCS control structure consists of 350 individual bays that can be opened to divert water from the river to Lake Pontchartrain to relieve pressure on downstream levees. Lake Pontchartrain (LP) is hydrologically connected to the Mississippi Sound (MS Sound) and the Gulf of Mexico and is more accurately characterized as an estuarine embayment. BCS openings have occurred twelve times prior to 2019 because of high Mississippi River stages, typically in late spring. In 2019, the spillway...

This dataset contains taxonomic and biovolume data for phytoplankton sampled from Detroit Lake, OR, in August, 2019, and August, 2020. Taxonomy is reported to the lowest possible taxonomic level along with total and percent biovolume. Surface grab samples for phytoplankton enumeration were collected with a van Dorn type sampler and then transferred into a clearn polycarbonate churn. Whole water samples were dispensed for total nutrients and phytoplankton identification and enumeration, the latter preserved with 1 percent Lugol's iodine solution. Samples were analyzed at BSA Environmental Services in Beachwood, Ohio. Cell numbers of all identified phytoplankton taxa were quantified on a per milliliter basis using...

Data release provides diffuse light attenuation coefficient of photosynthetically active radiation (KdPAR) derived from in-situ light measurements, along with surface water-quality and atmospheric data collected in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Rive Delta in California between January 2013 and May 2014. These associated surface level water-quality and atmospheric data, and categorical variables (for example season, region, etc.) were used to develop a KdPAR model using in situ light profile data collected in tandem, which we derived KdPAR from.
