This dataset depicts relative erosion rate derived for all land draining above the Mesoamerican reef. It is a function of slope, land cover type, precipitation and soil type. The indicators developed by the Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean project enable detailed comparative analyses of threats on many scales. Using basins derived from a hydrologically-corrected 30m resolution DEM as a unit for summary statistics, we provide a series of indicators focused on land-based sources of threat within the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. This includes indicators of a) the relative vulnerability of the land to erosion (based on slope, precipitation and soil erodibility); b) the relative erosion potential (REP) of the land, based on the relative vulnerability of the land, coupled with the current land cover type; c) the sediment delivery rate for each basin (percentage of eroded which reaches the river mouth); d) estimated sediment delivery for the basin, given current land use;

The effects of a dilute (ionic strength = 5 × 10−3 M) plume of treated sewage, with elevated levels (3.9 mg/L) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), upon the pH-dependency and magnitude of bacterial transport through an iron-laden, quartz sand aquifer (Cape Cod, MA) were evaluated using sets of replicate, static minicolumns. Compared with uncontaminated groundwater, the plume chemistry diminished bacterial attachment under mildly acidic (pH 5.0–6.5) in-situ conditions, in spite of the 5-fold increase in ionic strength and substantively enhanced attachment under more alkaline conditions. The North East 2nd Street Superfund site in Happy, Texas, overlies a groundwater plume of primarily carbon tetrachloride (CT) that is contained within an upper transmissive zone (EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., 2019) of the Ogallala aquifer. The Ogallala aquifer is contained at the site in Tertiary-age sediments of the Ogallala Formation, which are described by Nordstrom and Fallin (1989, p.10) as "tan, yellow, and reddish-brown, silty to coarse-grained sand mixed or alternating with yellow to red silty clay and variable sized gravel." The plume originated from the application of fire-retardant chemicals to the ground surface during the extinguishing of a fire at a grain storage elevator in 1962....

For areas with roads, we have developed a simple indicator of the erosivity of the land based on physical factors of the location (slope, precipitation, and a soil characteristic called K-factor, which reflects the erodibility of the given soil type.) This indicator provides a rough indication of the relative erosion that might result from road construction and runoff from roads in the range of locations on the US Virgin Islands. It identifies the roads likely to be contributing the most erosion to the watershed.
Water level, water temperature, and specific conductance data were collected during natural gradient tests on six observation wells screened in the upper transmissive zone of the Ogallala aquifer at the North East 2nd Street Superfund site in Happy, Texas, from November 6-13, 2023. Tests involved gravity draining 100-160 gallons of a low-concentration salt-spiked solution with an associated specific conductance of less than 8,000 microsiemens per centimeter (µs/cm) into the wells, measuring water level responses, and recording continuous downhole water temperature and water conductivity (specific conductance).
