Sediment samples and samples for water-toxicity testing were collected during 2014 from several streams in San Antonio, Texas known locally as the Westside creeks (Alazán, Apache, Martínez, and San Pedro Creeks) and from the San Antonio River. Samples were collected once during base-flow and again after periods of storm-water runoff (post-storm conditions) to determine baseline sediment- and water-quality conditions. Streambed-sediment samples were analyzed for selected constituents, including trace elements and organic contaminants such as pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), brominated flame retardants, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. This metadata record contains 6 tables used to assess sources of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) in the Back River watershed, Baltimore City, Maryland. Included in the dataset are PCB concentrations of surface water and porewater passive samplers from Herring Run, Moores Run, tidal Back River, and Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant; PCB concentrations of bed sediments and other solids, Fat, Oil, and Grease (FOG) samples, and road sediments; dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended solids (TSS), and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations of grab samples; and PCB concentrations of passive samplers from pump stations collected in 2018-2020.

Adult walleye (10 females and 10 males) were caught in Fox River (Wisconsin) during April 2014. Total length, weight, and age were determined for each of the walleye. Whole-fish homogenates were prepared during 2017. Lipid concentration and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congener concentrations were determined in each of the homogenates during 2017-2018. For each sample, PCB congener concentrations were summed to yield total PCB concentration. All lipid and PCB congener terminations were made at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In June 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Water Science Center (MD-DE-DC WSC) team began to collect and inventory available information on toxic contaminants within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. State agencies were contacted to determine available data. We measured polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in two taxa of riparian spiders from nine sites in 2011 at the Ashtabula River Area of Concern. We analyzed the extracts for 122 congeners following EPA method SW846 Method 8270D using gas chromatography mass spectrometry in the selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The National Contaminant Biomonitoring Program (NCBP), which was developed and maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), monitored concentrations of environmental contaminants in fish and wildlife over a period of about 20 years. The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset contains data collected on contaminants in sediments, benthic invertebrate populations, fish populations and abnormalities, and fish health of primarily brown bullhead in Areas of Concerns (AOCs) on Lake Erie. A subset of the larger dataset, this section specifically handles reference tables, used in database design in order to standardize often used values and to make the data file efficient, for the main tables of the LEEI dataset.
