These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set represents 2000 population density by block group as a 100-m grid using data from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing. The demographic data is from CensusCD 2000 Short Form Blocks published by GeoLytics, E. Brunswick, NJ, which uses the 2000 Census Summary File 1 (SF 1). Grid cell values represent population density in people per square kilometer multiplied by 10 so that the data could be stored as integer.

Our primary goal for this dataset was to obtain the population and number of dwellings at the finest common scale possible. Because the Canadian government first began to collect the pertinent census information at our desired scale in 2006, we used 2006 as the baseline for this product on the Canadian CCE. However, because (1) U.S. Census takes place every 10 years, and (2) our desired baseline date for the protocol was 2000, the census 2000 blocks were used on the U.S. CCE. This dataset was developed by the Crown Managers Partnership, as part of a transboundary collaborative management initiative for the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, based on commonly identified management priorities that are relevant at the...

A joint venture involving the National Atlas programs in Canada (Natural Resources Canada), Mexico (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía), and the United States (U.S. Geological Survey), as well as the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation, has led to the release (June 2004) of several new products: an updated paper map of North America, and its associated geospatial data sets and their metadata. These data sets are available online from each of the partner countries for download. The North American Atlas data are standardized geospatial data sets at 1:10,000,000 scale. A variety of basic data layers (e.g. roads, railroads, populated places, political boundaries,...

Number of fatal highway accidents and alcohol-related accidents by county for 1998 and 1999, expressed as automobile fatalities as a percent of total county populations. The data source used to create the data was the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bureau of Tranportation Statistics, Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS): http://www.fars.nhtsa.dot.gov.
Miscanthus is a newly introduced crop grown primarily to produce biomass for energy production and the area grown in the UK is anticipated to increase. Major differences in crop management from conventional arable crops have led to speculation that miscanthus may also have effects on farmland biodiversity. Six miscanthus fields were paired with six of a conventional crop, winter wheat, and bird diversity and abundance were compared in winter and during the breeding season along with potential food sources. Miscanthus fields had a greater abundance and diversity of birds than did wheat in winter and summer. In winter, the greater numbers of birds in miscanthus fields were probably attracted by the shelter provided...

Conclusions: Caribou demonstrated patterns of avoidance near linear features such as pipelines, roads, and other oil field structures. Females demonstrated heightened avoidance, especially during calving seasons. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: This study documented the behavioural reactions of caribou to oil development in the circumpolar regions of the northern hemisphere. Researchers observed patterns of avoidance near linear features such as pipelines, roads, and other oil field structures. Female caribou, especially those accompanied by calves avoided these areas in particular. Male caribou were more apt to occupy areas influenced by oil field structures and activity. In summary, the patterns oil field development...
The Ecological Flows (Ecoflows) Program within the Water Mission Area (WMA) provides the data and science needed to develop and quantify relations between water availability and biological responses through improving the WMA’s ability to predict key ecological outcomes of human activities on the landscape. Program sub-objectives include: developing a comprehensive understanding of the interactions among aquatic ecosystems, hydrology, and hydrochemistry, developing and applying models to predict potential effects of changes in population, land use, climate, and management practices upon future water availability, and predicting the availability of impaired water resources and the effects of using these water sources...

Global climatic change is expected to affect growth and survival of trees and will likely change the geographical distribution of many temperate and boreal tree species. Models that calculate the effects of environmental factors, as well as biotic factors, such as intra- and interspecific competition, on growth and survival of trees have been widely used to calculate the potential effects of temperature changes on tree populations. The methods to calculate thermal effects in such models are described and analyzed for the soundness and consistency of underlying assumptions. They are compared to the evidence from studies of tree physiology, growth, and biogeography. The use of thermal indices, especially temperature...

The Northwest Climate Conference (formerly called the Pacific Northwest Climate Science Conference) is the premier climate science event for the region, providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to share scientific results and discuss challenges and solutions related to the impacts of climate change on people, natural resources, and infrastructure in the Northwest. Conference participants include policy- and decision-makers, resource managers, and scientists from academia, public agencies, sovereign tribal nations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. More information can be found at the conference website: http://pnwclimateconference.org. The Third Annual Pacific Northwest Climate Science...

This thematic map summarizes racial and ethnic diversity in the United States. The Diversity Index shows the likelihood that two persons chosen at random from the same area, belong to different race or ethnic groups. The index ranges from 0 (no diversity) to 100 (complete diversity). The diversity score for the entire United States in 2010 is 60. This data variable is included in Esri’s Updated Demographics (2010/2015). This thematic map summarizes racial and ethnic diversity in the United States. The American Community Survey (ACS) is a national, publicly available survey provided by the U.S. Census Bureau that collects information about population, education, housing, economic status, and more. Planners, public officials, entrepreneurs, and researchers rely on the data collected through this survey to help understand community conditions and to support community planning efforts. This dataset shows human population density per square mile in 2013.
