Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response. The New England Mud Patch (NEMP), located south of Cape Cod, is an unusual feature on the U.S. Continental Shelf in that it is composed of fine-grained sediment layers containing a relatively-homogeneous mix of sand, silt, and clay-sized particles bounded by more typical sandy shelf sediments. The unique characteristics and nature of this deposit is due to a derivation of sediments that have been transported to, and deposited in, a basal bowl-shaped depression since the last glacial maximum. Ninety-two piston, vibra-, and gravity cores with a maximum length of 8.2...

The data include soil texture, soil-water, and estimated soil strength properties for soil map units and from geotechnical investigations of landslide areas affecting highways in the municipalities of Lares, Naranjito, and Utuado, Puerto Rico. The map units are derived from published soil mapping (https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/app/) and have been grouped by municipality, Unified Soil Classification System symbol, and order-of-magnitude ranges of hydraulic conductivity to create generalized map units for assigning soil-water parameters and soil-strength parameters. Each group (generalized unit) includes one or more soil map units. The groups are numbered sequentially from one (1) for each municipality with...

Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. These cores were analyzed for evidence of seafloor mass transport processes, with an emphasis on constraining the age and shallow stratigraphy of the landslide complex. Sedimentological and geotechnical characterization of the cores was carried out through whole core imaging and description, followed by analysis of discrete samples at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This digital data release consists of seven national data files of area- and depth-weighted averages of select soil attributes for every available county in the conterminous United States and the District of Columbia as of March 2014. The files are derived from Natural Resources Conservations Service’s (NRCS) Soil Survey Geographic database (SSURGO). The data files can be linked to the raster datasets of soil mapping unit identifiers...

These data tables describe the inputs and parameters for the 3D petroleum systems model. This section of data is included for users wishing to rebuild the 3D basin model from scratch, either in PetroMod or another basin modeling software package. All inputs and settings for model construction are included. Settings summaries are provided in a data bundle of comma-separated value (CSV) tables. Also included is the “Williston_Basin_model_inputs_glossary.csv” data table that provides a brief description of all the columns/value fields in the data bundle. This is a child item of a larger data release titled "Data release for the 3D petroleum systems model of the Williston Basin, USA".
