To meet the climate change planning and adaptation needs of Alaska managers and decision makers, I developed a set of statewide summaries of available climate change projections that can be further subset using GIS techniques for requests by management unit, watershed, or other location. This facilitates the development of tailored climate futures for decision makers’ regional or subregional management context. This file describes the source data and summaries for purposes of technical /scientific documentation. The methods and presentation for these datasets were adapted from products in previous USGS-approved IP products for the AKCASC Building Resilience Today project (e.g, Community of Kotlik et al. 2019)....
This digital dataset contains the Hot-Dry (HD) climate scenario data used for the Salinas and Carmel Rivers Basin Study (SCRBS). The Hot-Dry (HD) climate scenario is based on the 10th percentile change in precipitation and the 90th percentile change in temperature. The files included in this child item are the daily 270-meter gridded spatially distributed daily precipitation (PPT), maximum and minimum air temperature (TMX and TMN, respectively), and potential evapotranspiration (PET) from 1/1/2016 to 12/31/2100.
FY2010In addition to regional Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge projects that the Great Basin LCC (GBLCC) supports, GBLCC staff lend technical expertise to a range of projects and have contributed to important regional publications on a range of subjects. These publications range in type from textbooks, to management-oriented science and conservation plans, to scientific papers and have covered subjects like wind erosion following fire, soil microbiota response to drought, plant community resilience to invasive species, and alpine plant communities. In many cases these publications form foundations for scientifically-informed management strategies across the Great Basin.

Selected evapotranspiration data were collected from 7/5/2011 to 1/1/2017 at the Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS, https://nevada.usgs.gov/adrs/) in support of ongoing research to improve the understanding of hydrologic and contaminant-transport processes in arid environments. The data presented in this data release includes 30-minute and daily evapotranspiration and associated energy-balance fluxes, precipitation, soil water content, air and soil temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, and photosynthetically active radiation. Data methods follow those described in Moreo and others (2017). This is the third in a series of three releases of evapotranspiration data, which has been measured continuously...

The Midwest United States is facing wetter winters and springs and more variable precipitation in the summer and fall. Heavy floods and prolonged droughts are costly to agriculture, housing, transportation infrastructure, and recreational opportunities across the region. These extremes also stress the health of freshwater ecosystems that are important to the regional economy and quality of life. The number of freshwater invertebrates like mussels, crayfish, and aquatic insects are generally declining which strongly indicates declining freshwater health. Losing these animals limits benefits such as water purification, food for wildlife, and aesthetic values. This project seeks to understand and synthesize information...

This project links climate, hydrological, and ecological changes over the next 30 years in a Great Basin watershed. In recent years, climate variability on annual and decadal time scales has been recognized as greater than commonly perceived with increasing impacts on ecosystems and available water resources. Changes in vegetation distribution, composition and productivity resulting from climate change affect plant water use, which in turn can alter stream flow, groundwater and eventually available water resources. To better understand these links, project researchers implemented two computer-based numeric models in the Cleve Creek watershed in the Schell Creek Range, east of Ely, Nevada. The application of the...

Coastal rivers draining into the Gulf of Maine are home to the endangered Gulf of Maine Distinct Population Segment of Atlantic salmon. The Gulf of Maine population began to decline significantly by the late 19th century, leading to the closure of the commercial Atlantic salmon fishery in 1948. In recent years, populations have again begun to decrease again. State and federal fisheries biologists are concerned that climate-related changes in streamflow and temperature could impact salmon survival in these rivers. Projections of future climate conditions for the Northeast indicate warming air temperatures, earlier snowmelt runoff, and decreases in streamflow during the low flow period (summer). In the spring, snow...

This digital dataset contains the Central Tendency (CT) climate scenario data used for the Salinas and Carmel Rivers Basin Study (SCRBS). The Central Tendency (CT) climate scenario is based on the 50th percentile change in precipitation, 50th percentile change in temperature. The files included in this child item are the daily 270-meter gridded spatially distributed daily precipitation (PPT), maximum and minimum air temperature (TMX and TMN, respectively), and potential evapotranspiration (PET) from 1/1/2016 to 12/31/2100.
This digital dataset contains the Warm-Dry (WD) climate scenario data used for the Salinas and Carmel Rivers Basin Study (SCRBS). The Warm-Dry (WD) climate scenario is based on the 10th percentile change in precipitation and the 10th percentile change in temperature. The files included in this child item are the daily 270-meter gridded spatially distributed daily precipitation (PPT), maximum and minimum air temperature (TMX and TMN, respectively), and potential evapotranspiration (PET) from 1/1/2016 to 12/31/2100.
This digital dataset contains the baseline and future climate data used as the basis for analysis of current and future water supplies and demands in the Salinas and Carmel Rivers Basin Study (SCRBS). SCRBS uses a suite of integrated hydrologic models to explore impacts of future climate and socioeconomic scenarios on water supplies and demands in the basins. SCRBS considers one baseline climate scenario that represents recent historical climate conditions and five future climate scenarios that encompass the range of uncertainty in projections of future climate conditions through the end of the 21st century. The baseline scenario was developed by removing trends from an observed historical climate dataset such that...
Rain-gages are critical instrumentation for documenting the rainfall forcing of post-wildfire hydrologic, erosional, and water-quality response. This USGS Data Release presents tipping-bucket rain gage data following two wildfires: the 2000 Cerro Grande Fire near Los Alamos, New Mexico and the 2010 Fourmile Canyon Fire near Boulder, Colorado. The data presented in this USGS Data Release are used for analyses that demonstrate important concepts in precipitation characteristics that relate to temporal and spatial scales. Further information regarding the location and data processing are available in the metadata.
This digital dataset contains the Warm-Wet (WW) climate scenario data used for the Salinas and Carmel Rivers Basin Study (SCRBS). The Warm-Wet (WW) climate scenario is based on the 90th percentile change in precipitation and the 10th percentile change in temperature. The files included in this child item are the daily 270-meter gridded spatially distributed daily precipitation (PPT), maximum and minimum air temperature (TMX and TMN, respectively), and potential evapotranspiration (PET) from 1/1/2016 to 12/31/2100.
This digital dataset contains the Hot-Wet (HW) climate scenario data used for the Salinas and Carmel Rivers Basin Study (SCRBS). The Hot-Wet (HW) climate scenario is based on the 90th percentile change in precipitation and the 90th percentile change in temperature. The CoRE (Contractions or Range Expansions) database contains a library of published literature and data on species range shifts in response to climate change. Through a systematic review of publications returned from searches on Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus, we selected primary research articles that documented or attempted to document species-level distribution shifts in animal or plant species in response to recent anthropogenic climate change. We extracted data in four broad categories: (i) basic study information (study duration, location, data quality and methodological factors); (ii) basic species information (scientific names and taxonomic groups); (iii) information on the observed range shifts...

As the predicted impacts of climate change are becoming more apparent, natural resource managers are faced with the task of developing climate adaptation plans. These managers need state-of-the-art, scientifically based information upon which to base these management plans and decisions consistently across California and the Great Basin. This project applies historical, current, and projected climate data to a regional water model to examine water availability, biodiversity, and conservation. Analysis of this climate and hydrology data is expected to help managers understand areas in the region and landscape where the effects of climate change are expected to be the most profound. The study also addresses how the...
