A sea level rise vulnerability assessment has been completed for the shorelines of San Juan County Washington. This tool was developed to enhance understanding among land managers, provide a scientific foundation for shoreline management decisions and improve conservation of shoreline processes critical to ecosystem health. This project will create a comprehensive communication strategy that includes improving the model’s credibility, researching adaptation strategies, creating decision support tools, and hosting focus meetings.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center has developed the Landscape Dynamics Assessment Tool (LanDAT) to help natural resource conservation practitioners monitor and assess impacts on changing landscapes and the ecological services and benefits they provide to people. Vast areas of the PNW remain data deficient with respect to the estimated more than 750 wild bee species that provide essential ecosystem services there. The Oregon Bee Atlas is working with expert volunteer Master Melittologists to address these deficits by conducting intensive multi-method inventory and monitoring field work throughout the state and with a special focus in Grassland and Sagebrush habitats due to their rich biodiversity. We found few reports in the literature containing useful data on the nesting phenology of lesser prairie-chickens; therefore, managers must rely on short-term observations and measurements of parameters that provide some predictive insight into climate impacts on nesting ecology. Our field studies showed that prairie-chickens on nests were able to maintain relatively consistent average nest temperature of 31 °C and nest humidities of 56.8 percent whereas average external temperatures (20.3–35.0 °C) and humidities (35.2– 74.9 percent) varied widely throughout the 24 hour (hr) cycle. To inform management for a resilient and functioning landscape, we need to understand how the landscape is changing. The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative, working with a diverse group of managers and stakeholders, initiated development of a coordinated monitoring system for the northwest boreal ecoregion in 2016. The goal for the coordinated monitoring system is to provide a set of common denominators (i.e., minimum standards) that will allow cooperators to combine monitoring data to make landscape-scale inferences. This spatially-explicit decision support tool identifies wetlands and grasslands that are currently suitable for mottled duck nesting and brood rearing activities as well as identify areas that are priority for grassland establishment and freshwater enhancement for mottled duck nesting and brood rearing activities in the Western Gulf Coast. The identification process is based on key biological parameters such as patch size, land use type, distance to habitat, etc. Additionally, these datasets present the data in a form that prioritizes habitat from more suitable to less suitable based on landscape metrics.
