This spreadsheet compiles all longitudinal survey data collected along Redwood Creek during the thirty year period, 1977-2007. Long-term surveys were conducted along three reaches of Redwood Creek: Elam to Hayes creek reach, Dolason to Wier (Emerald) creek reach, and Bond to 44 creek reach. Longitudinal streambed surveys follow the channel thalweg (deepest point) and are useful in documenting aquatic habitat conditions (for example, pool depth distribution, percent length in riffles vs pools). Each of these surveys was conducted in the summer months of each recorded year and took about two weeks to complete.

This data set compiles all cross-sectional survey data collected along Redwood Creek during the sixty year period, 1953-2013 (note that no surveys were conducted between 1954 and 1972). Cross-sectional surveys are transects perpendicular to channel flow and are used to document sedimentation and erosion (scour and fill) in river channel beds and on streambanks.

Dr. Richard Janda of the USGS began a channel monitoring program in Redwood Creek in northern coastal California in 1973. The USGS continued this work through 2013, when the Research Geologist, Dr. Mary Madej retired. This effort produced 40 years of channel change data in rivers that were disrupted by severe erosion following timber harvest of old-growth redwood forests, a portion of the program's data (plus 1953 data) has been preserved in this data release. Original field surveys documented bank erosion, aggradation, and degradation at 60 cross-sectional transects at annual or biannual timesteps. Three river reaches also have long-term longitudinal channel bed surveys which document the distribution and development...

On September 6-7, 2013, 30 redwoods researchers, managers, and experts attended a workshop to share information and develop preliminary strategies to manage redwoods for persistence under climate change. Our discussion revolved around existing goals and objectives, current and future trends (including climate change projections), and how to manage for resilience, resistance, and transition. After the workshop, participants were invited on a field trip to learn about restoration efforts in Redwood National Park aimed at restoring previously harvested areas to conditions resembling mature redwood forest composition.

Coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) and their many associated species create an iconic ecosystem, yet the impacts of stressors, including a variety of land use practices and climate change, threaten their continued persistence on the landscape. In September 2013, we held a workshop with researchers, managers, and other redwoods experts to explore the likely impacts of climate change and develop some initial strategies for adaptation. Workshop participants from diverse backgrounds identified four primary strategies to increasing the resilience of redwood ecosystems in the face of climate change. These included (1) restoring old-growth characteristics that protect stands from many stressors; (2) improving connectivity...
