THE DESERT CONSERVATION PROGRAM - The Clark County Desert Conservation Program (DCP) manages Endangered Species Act compliance on behalf of Clark County and the cities of Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Mesquite and the Nevada Department of Transportation (collectively, the Permittees) through implementation of the Clark County Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (MSHCP) and associated Section 10(a)(1)(B) incidental take permit. The DCP was established in 1990 through a collaborative forum of local government representatives, public land managers, private landowners, interest groups and individuals. Clark County serves as the implementing agent on behalf of the Permittees and the DCP...

The purpose of this Integrated Natural Resources Plan (INRMP) is to guide and document the manner in which the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground (USAYPG or YPG) sutains the military mission on the installation while managing the ecological health of our natural resources area. The INRMP will ensure sound land management, environmental stewardship, and compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and applicable state and federal management plans, are consider during mission and project planning activities and that no net loss of mission capacity results from meeting our stewardship responsibilities. The INRMP is consistent with military requirements and the Sikes Act and associated amendments. Management of natural...

A Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) provides management direction for a refuge for 15 years. With input for the public, the Service forms a vision of a refuge's desired conditions and the actions needed to achieve it. A refuge's vision may include improved habitat conditions and expanded public use programs that are compatible with resource conservation.

iMapInvasives Arizona is an online data management tool that is a standardized, central repository of location information for all invasive species taxon. The tool facilitates data sharing and utilization by land managers, the public and other organizations. The database stores basic point locations of invasive species observations, but also allows for advanced data management, including the capability to input treatment records, survey records, and track infestations over time. Use this tool by contributing data, planning and collaborating projects, or monitoring infestations.

To help resource managers prioritize management actions across large landscapes, the Integrated Landscape Assessment Project (ILAP) produced databases, reports, maps, analyses, and other information showing mid- to broad-scale (thousands to hundreds of thousands of hectares and larger areas) vegetation conditions and potential future trends, key wildlife habitat conditions and trends, wildfire hazard, potential economic value of products that might be generated during vegetation management, and other critical information for all lands and all major upland vegetation types in Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. ILAP work involved gathering and consolidating existing information, developing new information...

The Arizona Game and Fish Department (Department) recently revised its State Wildlife Action Plan that provides a framework and information to assist in setting conservation priorities for the state’s wildlife and habitats. Data gathered for Arizona’s State Wildlife Action Plan represents myriad sources and extensive public comment, and is used to support the Department’s efforts to develop proactive conservation goals and objectives. Much of that data (more than 300 data layers) is compiled into a single model of wildlife conservation potential, the Species and Habitat Conservation Guide. To ensure the State Wildlife Action Plan information is accessible and useful to everyone, the Arizona Game and Fish Department...

The following plans are in various stages of preparation, from early pre-planning to complete. The list includes the name of the National Wildlife Refuge, location reference, type of plan being prepared, general plan status, name of planning team leader, and planner's contact information including a clickable email link. The plans are arranged geographically by the four states of the Southwest Region: Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas

These data describe coarse habitat use, activity information, and differences between used and available microhabitats and vegetation types to provide information about the behavior and habitat relationships of adult female giant gartersnakes (Thamnophis gigas) associated with a restored marsh in the Sacramento Valley of California. These data support the following publication: Brian J. Halstead, Patricia Valcarcel, Glenn D. Wylie, Peter S. Coates, Michael L. Casazza, and Daniel K. Rosenberg (2016) Active Season Microhabitat and Vegetation Selection by Giant Gartersnakes Associated with a Restored Marsh in California. Solar development has the potential to have widespread impacts on the California desert. Thus, it is important to have as much information as possible regarding the impacts of facilities and related infrastructure on the natural ecosystem and surrounding desert communities, how current policies are influencing development, and how the federal process is working on evaluating solar development applications. This research is detailed in this website. "Renewable Energy in the California Desert: Mechanisms for Evaluating Solar Development on Public Lands" is the result of sixteen months of research conducted by ten graduate students from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environmen t through...

Chihuahuan Desert landscapes exemplify the ecological conditions, vulnerability, and management challenges in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. The goal of the Jornada Basin Long Term Ecological Research program (JRN LTER) established in 1982 is to understand and quantify the key factors and processes controlling ecosystem dynamics and patterns in Chihuahuan Desert landscapes. In collaboration with the Jornada Experimental Range (USDA ARS), studies initiated in 1915 have been incorporated into the JRN LTER program. Previous research focused on desertification, a state change from perennial grasslands to woody plant dominance that occurs globally. Based on findings from growing long-term databases, the...

Sky Island grasslands of central and southern Arizona, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico form the “grassland seas” that surround small forested mountain ranges in the borderlands. Their unique biogeographical setting and the ecological gradients associated with “Sky Island mountains” add tremendous floral and faunal diversity to these grasslands and the region as a whole. Sky Island grasslands have undergone dramatic vegetation changes over the last 130 years including encroachment by shrubs, loss of perennial grass cover and spread of non-native species. Changes in grassland composition and structure have not occurred uniformly across the region and they are dynamic and ongoing. In 2009, The National Fish...

How well are we protecting common plants and animals? Gap Analysis is the science of answering this question. Developing the data and tools to support that science is the mission of the USGS Gap Analysis Program (GAP). GAP works to ensure that common species – those that are not officially endangered – remain common by identifying those species and plant communities that are not adequately represented in existing conservation lands. Learn more about Gap Analysis >> We work with a wide range of government, academic, non-profit and private partners, providing them with essential data and analyses that they can use to protect the habitats on which the survival of common species depends.

Number of turtle and crocodilian species, by freshwater ecoregion. We generated the map of freshwater turtle and crocodilian species richness—the number of species present in each ecoregion—from species distribution maps, primarily drawing on the sources listed below. Distribution maps for 260 freshwater turtle species were provided by Buhlmann et al. (2007). The original distribution maps represented coarse ranges of where species were thought to be present in the wild; however, they were not exact ranges. Buhlmann et al. compiled data from museum and literature records. They correlated verified locality points with GIS-defined hydrologic unit codes (HUCs) and subsequently created “projected” distribution maps...
