These data were collected in coordination with the U.S. Geological Survey Hydrogeophysics Branch for the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site. Data were collected using an EXO2 suspended 5.5 feet below a kayak. Sensor was dragged along the bottom of the lake except in instances where water depth was greater than 5.5 ft. The continuous profiling was conducted while paddling a kayak using Hypack 2017a to navigate survey lines set on a georeferenced background map to the best of ability. An EXO 2.0 handheld controller was used for coordinate information. Data collected includes, water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. These data are provided in two...

The purpose of the Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (CREMP) is to monitor the status and trends of selected reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary(FKNMS). CREMP assessments have been conducted annually at fixed sites since 1996 and data collected provides information on the temporal changes in benthic cover and diversity of stony corals and associated marine flora and fauna. The core field methods continue to be underwater videography and timed coral species inventories. Findings presented in this report include data from 109 stations at 37 sites sampled from 1996 through 2008 in the Florida Keys and 1999 through 2008 in the Dry Tortugas. The report describes the annual differences (between...

Solar development has the potential to have widespread impacts on the California desert. Thus, it is important to have as much information as possible regarding the impacts of facilities and related infrastructure on the natural ecosystem and surrounding desert communities, how current policies are influencing development, and how the federal process is working on evaluating solar development applications. This research is detailed in this website. "Renewable Energy in the California Desert: Mechanisms for Evaluating Solar Development on Public Lands" is the result of sixteen months of research conducted by ten graduate students from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environmen t through...

Chihuahuan Desert landscapes exemplify the ecological conditions, vulnerability, and management challenges in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. The goal of the Jornada Basin Long Term Ecological Research program (JRN LTER) established in 1982 is to understand and quantify the key factors and processes controlling ecosystem dynamics and patterns in Chihuahuan Desert landscapes. In collaboration with the Jornada Experimental Range (USDA ARS), studies initiated in 1915 have been incorporated into the JRN LTER program. Previous research focused on desertification, a state change from perennial grasslands to woody plant dominance that occurs globally. Based on findings from growing long-term databases, the...

The U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site was established in southeastern Washington during the 1940s to produce plutonium, and the Pantex plant in Texas (used to load conventional ammunition shells and bombs) was rehabilitated in the 1950s to assemble nuclear weapons using the plutonium produced at Hanford. Current concentrations of airborne radionuclides around the perimeters of both sites are below applicable guidelines. Concentrations of radionuclides and nonradiological water quality in the Columbia River at Hanford and radiological and nonradiological water quality in the Ogallala Aquifer beneath the Pantex plant are also in compliance with applicable standards. Foodstuffs irrigated with river water downstream...
We examined bird and bat mortality at a new 89-turbine windfarm constructed in an environmentally sensitive area in north-central Iowa. The windfarm became operational in November 2001. It is located in cropland between three Wildlife Management Areas (WMA's) with historically high bird use. In the past, migrant and resident waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds moved between the WMA's through the area now occupied by the windfarm. Studies of bird collision mortality in California and elsewhere raised concerns about the possibility of mortalities in this area. From April 15, 2003 and December 15, 2003 we searched for dead animals under 26 randomly selected turbines. Six 76.2 m by 3.0 m transects were maintained...

A number of issues that relate analytic study of the climatic consequences of increasing anthropogenic release of greenhouse gases to environmental policy are raised. We discuss in particular the role of uncertainty of information in the context of the long term global and potentially massive nature of the threat. Some recommendations are made for new lines of study to determine the degree of urgency of the problem and the proximate need for remedial measures and the difficulties of their implementation.
In its first funded year this project created an online environment in which land managers and their technical support staff can quickly find the climate adaptation information they need and communicate with the researchers producing the data. Phase 2 of the project focused on reaching out to the user community to get them engaged in the Climate Commons, and continuing development of the site. In year 3 and beyond, the Climate Commons became the CA LCC’s project data management platform as well as a digital library offering a starting place to find climate change science relevant to conservation decision-making. http://climate.calcommons.org.

This report is volume 2 of a two-volume ecological assessment of grassland ecosystems in the Southwestern United States. Broad-scale assessments are syntheses of current scientific knowledge, including a description of uncertainties and assumptions, to provide a characterization and comprehensive description of ecological, social, and economic components within an assessment area. Volume 1 of this assessment focused on the ecology, types, conditions, and management practices of Southwestern grasslands. Volume 2 (this volume) describes wildlife and fish species, their habitat requirements, and species-specific management concerns, in Southwestern grasslands. This assessment is regional in scale and pertains primarily...

The call for practical science to guide landscape conservation and sustainable land use across the American West is growing, due to increasing human needs and the rapidly changing environment. As the complexity of land and resource management challenges increases, so too does the complexity of policy decisions and the need to engage the public in developing solutions and creating the base of support necessary for implementing them. The Landscape Conservation Initiative provides scientific and community leadership for addressing emerging broad-scale conservation and environmental challenges in the Grand Canyon region and across the West. Based at Northern Arizona University and drawing on the expertise of its many...

Our Mission & History Volunteers in the Tumacacoris. Photo by Trevor Hare Sky Island Alliance is a science-based conservation organization. We are dedicated to the protection and restoration of the rich natural heritage of native species and habitats in the Sky Island region of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. We work with volunteers, scientists, land owners, public officials, and government agencies to establish protected areas, restore healthy landscapes, and promote public appreciation of the region's unique biological diversity. Sky Island Alliance pioneered landscape-level conservation planning by integrating the science of conservation biology with grassroots organizing and on-the-ground...

These data were collected in coordination with the U.S. Geological Survey Hydrogeophysics Branch for the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site. An EXO2 multi-parameter sonde was used to vertically characterize water quality at point locations around the perimeter of the north unnamed lake, and in area of the lake suspected to contain a hydrocarbon plume. Measurements were taken from a kayak using Hypack 2017a to navigate and set target points. Data collected includes barometric pressure, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, turbidity, pH, and water temperature. At each location and specific depth there were typically multiple measurements made, especially in the organic sediments...

Ellsworth Creek Preserve is being used by The Nature Conservancy to test impacts of three different restoration treatments on eight experimental sub-basins within the watershed. This suite of GIS data is part of the baseline monitoring (data collected prior to treatment) of that experiment and includes information on surveys of migratory forest birds, stream-associated amphibians, stream physical habitat, and forest structure and vegetation. For more information, visit waconservation.org . For summary reports of this data, visit our Ellsworth Creek ConserveOnline Workspace .
