We have developed a state-scale version of the MARKAL energy optimization model, commonly used to model energy policy at the US national scale and internationally. We apply the model to address state-scale impacts of a renewable electricity standard (RES) and a carbon tax in one southeastern state, Georgia. Biomass is the lowest cost option for large-scale renewable generation in Georgia; we find that electricity can be generated from biomass co-firing at existing coal plants for a marginal cost above baseline of 0.2-2.2 cents/kWh and from dedicated biomass facilities for 3.0-5.5 cents/kWh above baseline. We evaluate the cost and amount of renewable electricity that would be produced in-state and the amount of out-of-state...

This dataset contains the physical collection information (e.g., sample location, date, gear type) and microsatellite DNA genotype of egg and larval Lake Sturgeon collected in the St. Clair and Detroit rivers in 2015 and 2016. Individuals were genotyped for 18 microsatellite loci (13 disomic and 5 polysomic). Alleles (base pair sizes) were recorded as presence absence scores (1:present, 2:absent, 0:missing data) for all previously observed alleles. Thus individual genotypes were recorded as pseudo diploid dominant phenotypes resulting in individual vectors of length n=205 for each genotyped egg or larval individual.

Point shapefile of Wind Turbine locations in Wyoming as of December 2010. Turbine location and attribute data extracted from the FAA Obstruction Evaluation Database (https://oeaaa.faa.gov/oeaaa/external/portal.jsp). The FAA requires evaluation of any wind turbine (or structure) over 200ft. Therfore any wind turbine under 200ft would not be included in this data layer. In 2008 the FAA put a focus on wind turbines creating region categories specifically for wind turbines. With this, records for wind turbines before 2008 are less inclusive. The FAA database provides no determination of Wind Turbines that have been built and Wind Turbines that are still in planning stages. Therefore this layer includes Wind Turbines...
This data contains placer district boundaries in Alaska. Districts refer to the name of a group of geologically and geographically related placer deposits, as derived from published sources or from general usage. Economic and significant heavy metals are reported for each district.
This report and digital data release presents 209 new geochemical analyses on historic U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) samples, including 90 rock, 9 stream sediment, 14 soil, and 96 heavy mineral concentrate (pan concentrate) samples. These samples were originally collected by the USBM as part of their search for radioactive mineral deposits in the northern Darby Mountains, eastern Seward Peninsula, Alaska Historic USBM sample materials were retrieved by DGGS from the DGGS Geologic Materials Center (GMC), where the USBM samples were transferred as part of the federally funded Minerals Data and Information Rescue in Alaska (MDIRA) program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The text and analytical data and tables associated...
This report and digital data release presents 12 new geochemical analyses on historic U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) samples, including 6 rock, 4 stream sediment, and 2 heavy mineral concentrate (pan concentrate) samples. These samples were originally collected by the USBM to follow up reported tungsten anomalies in the VABM Bend area, Charley River and Eagle quadrangles, east-central Alaska. Historic USBM sample materials were retrieved by DGGS from the DGGS Geologic Materials Center (GMC), where the USBM samples were transferred as part of the federally funded Minerals Data and Information Rescue in Alaska (MDIRA) program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The article discusses a report published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) that examined the technical feasibility of using wind energy for electricity generation. The report assessed the costs, impacts and challenges associated with the production of 20% wind energy by 2030. Results have shown that there is a need for an enhanced transmission infrastructure and an increase in turbine installations to achieve 20% wind energy.

This article compares US and Chinese incentives in winning oil contracts in African countries. Exploration and development of African oil resources has soared, and many nations are competing for these new oil contracts. China has won a significant portion of these oil contracts due to their unique incentive offerings. This report will address a brief history and the development of Sino–African policies and interests, modern US–African energy policy and interests, petroleum opportunities in Africa, China’s growing oil demand, and information on both American and Chinese incentives strategies. This information will be used to compare US and Chinese incentive strategies on winning African oil contracts. Implications...

This 1:50,000 scale geologic map describes the distribution of unconsolidated deposits, identifies local geologic hazards, and provides information about the depositional environment and basic engineering properties of common surficial-geologic materials in and around Shaktoolik, Alaska. Map units are the result of combined field observations and aerial imagery interpretation. A suite of local ground observations were collected over a two-week period in July 2011 by a helicopter-supported team of DGGS geologists and collaborators. Field investigations included soil test pits, sample collection, soil and rock description, oblique aerial photography, and documentation of landscape morphology.
The Last of the Wild represents the least influenced (most wild) areas of major terrestrial biomes. Most wild in each biome are defined as areas with Human Footprint Index values less than or equal to 10. The map shows the distribution of what remains the least influenced areas in each biome. The Last of the Wild Dataset of the Last of the Wild Project, Version 2, 2005 (LWP-2) is derived from the LWP-2 Human Footprint Dataset.
