First paragraph of introduction: On 20 July 2004 a single Asian tapeworm (Bothriocephalus acheilognathi) was collected from the intestine of a roundtail chub (Gila robusta) in the Yampa River in Dinosaur National Monument in northwestern Colorado. This fish (274 mm TL) was collected at river mile 24 and dissected in the field. A single tapeworm was removed from the intestine and preserved in ethanol. The tapeworm was later identified in the laboratory as B. acheilognathi by its characteristic arrow-shaped scolex (Poole et al. 1984). Roundtail chub (Gila robusta) status data created for the Western Division of the American Fisheries Society (WDAFS)
These data were compiled as part of a larger study to evaluate post-stocking survival of hatchery-reared Roundtail Chub. We conducted a two year study (Dec. 2015 – Mar. 2017) in the upper Verde River at the Burnt Ranch stocking location near Paulden, Arizona. Young of year Roundtail Chub were acquired from the Arizona Research and Conservation Center in Cornville, Arizona. These data were used to examine the effectiveness of a non-lethal tool (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, "BIA") to estimate the physiological condition of endangered and threatened fishes in the Colorado River Basin. We conducted laboratory trials using hatchery-raised Humpback Chub and Bonytail and wild-captured Roundtail Chub, where fish were subjected to different feeding trials to elucidate a response in physiological condition and different temperature treatments to approximate field conditions. In accordance with recovery goals finalized in 2002, a population estimate was completed for adult humpback chub in Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River. This population estimate was conducted from 1998 to 2000 with the objectives of obtaining population estimates for humpback chub and roundtail chub in Westwater Canyon. These data were compiled to evaluate the potential impact various environmental conditions may have on native fish populaitons through predation. Introduced warm-water sport fishes present a high predation risk for juvenile native fishes, but observations of juvenile native fish surviving and recruiting in some rare cases led us to question what environmental conditions might be responsible for these trends. These data were compiled to allow for a relative comparison of predation effectiveness between a suite of warm-water predators under a variety of environmental conditions. Mean numbers of prey fish surviving in replicated overnight laboratory predation trials were quantified.
To map the distribution of bluehead sucker, flannelmouth sucker, and roundtail chub (three-species assemblage), we compiled occurrence information from Wyoming Game and Fish Department (streams, rivers, and lakes and reservoirs), Utah Natural Heritage Program (point locations), and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (6th-level watersheds). We evaluated distribution, habitat use, spawning, and species associations of the endangered humpback chub (Gila cypha) in the Yampa and Green rivers, Dinosaur National Monument, from 1986 to 1989. Adult and juvenile humpback chub were captured in high-gradient reaches of Yampa and Whirlpool canyons where they were rare (n = 133, G. robusta) were widely distributed in eddies, pools, runs, and riffles. Humpback chub (n = 39) and roundtail chub (n = 242) in reproductive condition were sympatric in eddy habitats during the 5-6 week period following highest spring runoff.
