This digital database is the product of collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research Potsdam, Foothill College GeoSpatial Technology Certificate Program, and the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska. The primary goal for creating this digital database is to enhance current estimates of organic carbon stored in deep permafrost, in particular Late Pleistocene syngenetic ice-rich loess permafrost deposits, called Yedoma. This deposit is vulnerable to thermokarst and erosion due to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. The original paper maps were issued by the Department of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation or its predecessor the...

Conclusions: Caribou demonstrated patterns of avoidance near linear features such as pipelines, roads, and other oil field structures. Females demonstrated heightened avoidance, especially during calving seasons. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: This study documented the behavioural reactions of caribou to oil development in the circumpolar regions of the northern hemisphere. Researchers observed patterns of avoidance near linear features such as pipelines, roads, and other oil field structures. Female caribou, especially those accompanied by calves avoided these areas in particular. Male caribou were more apt to occupy areas influenced by oil field structures and activity. In summary, the patterns oil field development...

This point shapefile approximates locations within 20 km of the North Pacific Coastline, as defined by the "World Country Boundaries (Generalized)" shapefile distributed by ESRI as part of their Data & Maps data series. They are based on raster data at 4 km resolution. Therefore there are between 3-5 points extending out from each location along the shoreline (at 4 km intervals).

The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data of the nearshore region of the North Pacific show temperature ranges in degrees C using points whose locations correspond to the centroids of AVHRR Pathfinder version 5 monthly, global, 4 km data set (PFSST V50). The pathfinder rasters are available from the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC), hosted by NASA JPL. The data points in this dataset lie within a 20 km buffer from the GSHHS (Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline) coastline. The GSHHS vector data are available from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). Furthermore, each point in the SST dataset is categorized by the ecoregion in which it is located. This...

Major forest species of Russia, created from an amalgamation of all applicable IIASA data with the Forest State Account of 1993, produced at a scale of 1:1 million. It is p art of the Land Resources of Russia collection. More information on the forestry datasets can be found at: http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Research/FOR/russia_cd/forestry.htm .

From Land Resources of Russia: Vegetation is the totality of vegetation communities and also accompanying groups of plants occurring in the various regions of the Earth. In contrast to flora, vegetation is characterized not only by the species composition, but by the abundance and the combination of species and of various life forms of plants, and by their spatial structure and dynamics. Vegetation is a most important component of the biosphere that is closely related with climate, hydrology, soils, relief, and animal life. For more information on this dataset, visit http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Research/FOR/russia_cd/veg_des.htm

Wetlands of Russia, from the Land Resources of Russia project. Wetlands are defined in this dataset as wet (bordering on water saturation) areas intermediate between land and water (Considine and Considine, 1994). They are the ecosystems that include sea surface, lakes, rivers, coastal vegetation, bogs, and alluvial and delta complexes. Wetlands play an important part in landscape stabilization, natural environmental cleaning, the traditional land use of small groups of people, and biodiversity conservation. The wetlands of Russia have a large complex of ecosystems. Three general groups of wetlands are recognized, organized by their ecosystem types and location in the landscape: marine, inland, and anthropogenic...

Point coverage describing biodiversity in protected areas of Russia, from the Land Resources of Russia collection. The attribute is number of vascular plant species in the protected area, and other attributes in the dataset describe the number of amphibian, reptile, bird, nesting bird, and mammal species found in the protected area. Full description of this dataset can be found at: http://www.iiasa.ac.at/Research/FOR/russia_cd/biod.htm .

This data lists the active volcanoes of Kamchatka and the Kurile Islands, their location in latitude/longitude decimal degrees, and the year of the last major eruptive event. The 65 volcanoes listed meet at least one of the following criteria: (1) an historically documented eruption, (2) fumarolic activity, but without a historically documented eruption, or (3) potentially active volcanoes which have erupted within the past 3500 years.

River systems in Central Asia have been well-studied by scientists in the Former Soviet Union (FSU), but their work has been largely inaccessible to English-speaking North American scientists. Like their North American counterparts, rivers and associated vegetation and wildlife in Central Asia have undergone tremendous change as a result of water management, agriculture and grazing. Important applied aspects of studies of Central Asian systems include the ecology of species native to Central Asia but invasive in North America (e.g., tamarisk, Russian-olive), and riparian restoration approaches (technology transfer from the U.S. to FSU). The objective of this task is to develop and edit a book on riparian ecosystems...
