The Natural Resources Conservation Service ( NRCS ) - National Cartography and Geospatial Center ( NCGC ) previously archived and distributed the State Soil Geographic ( STATSGO ) Database. The STATSGO spatial and tabular data were revised and updated in 2006. STATSGO has been renamed to the U.S. General Soil Map ( STATSGO2 ). It is available for download from https://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/.
**Symbology has been adjusted by the Open Space Institute from The Nature Conservancy's original "Geophysical Settings, 2016 Eastern U.S. and Canada" dataset.** The geophysical settings are defined by their physical properties – geology, soil, and elevation - that correspond to differences in the flora and fauna they support. They also differ in ecological character, in their value for agriculture or mining, and how they have been developed by people. For example, the region’s high granite mountains are both largely intact and topographically complex, whereas low coastal sandplains are both more fragmented and relatively flat. The geophyical settings classification enabled us to compare resilience characteristics...

Soils data compiled from USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service, SSURGO data, then clipped to the refuge boundary. Some of the attributes have been added to the dataset, but not the complete set. For additional attributes, consult the full SSURGO data. This dataset covers the northern half of the Southern Rockies Landscape Conservation Cooperative. It was aggregated and converted to raster by Conservation Biology Institute as part of a soil vulnerability study funded in part by the Southern Rockies LCC. The soil data come from a digital soil survey, the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey...

This dataset represents soils of Wyoming at 1:100,000- scale. The layer contains 350 separate soils descriptions across 23 Wyoming counties. The layer was compiled based on the five-factor soil forming model using digital surficial geology, bedrock geology, and elevation. This dataset will be more fully documented in 23 AES publications scheduled for completion in winter of 99/00. These publications will use the designation AES Bulletin B-1071 followed by a two letter abreviation for each county.

This dataset depicts portions of serpentine soils that are on privately owned lands for the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion. Cell resolution is 30 m. In 1999, the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) concluded a conservation science assessment of the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion culminating in the report “A Science-based Conservation Assessment for the Klamath-Siskiyou Ecoregion.” Numerous ecological assessments were conducted and a conservation plan was proposed based on the results for special elements, ecosystem representation, and focal species. That study focused primarily on the public lands portion of the ecoregion. A private lands assessment for the World Wildlife fund began in 2002. The ecoregion encompasses...
Fire can be a significant driver of permafrost change in boreal landscapes, altering the availability of soil carbon and nutrients that have important implications for future climate and ecological succession. However, not all landscapes are equally susceptible to fire-induced change. As fire frequency is expected to increase in the high latitudes, methods to understand the vulnerability and resilience of different landscapes to permafrost degradation are needed. Geophysical and other field observations reveal details of both near-surface (less than 1 m) and deeper (greater than 1 m) impacts of fire on permafrost along 14 transects that span burned-unburned boundaries in different landscape settings within interior...

This is a subset of FAOs The Digital Soil Map of the World for North and South America and selected attributes. The Digital Soil Map of the World and Derived Soil Properties CD-ROM (Version 3.5, November 1995) is based on the FAO/UNESCO Soil Map of the World, original scale 1:5 million. The CD-ROM contains two types of files, Digital Soil Map of the World (DSMW) map sheets and derived soil properties files with images derived from the Soil Map of the World.
