This project resulted in an extensive mapping of coastal change along the entire coastline of the Western Alaska Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC). The work provides important baseline information on the distribution and magnitude of landscape changes over the past 41 years. The extent of change to the coastline and to coastal features, such as spits, barrier islands, estuaries, tidal guts and lagoons, was known to be substantial in some areas along the coast (e.g., portions of the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta), although the extent of change along the full Bering Sea coast was not well documented. With this analysis, changes can be summarized for different land ownerships or other units to assess the extent of recent...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the HarrisāGalveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, Fort Bend Subsidence District, Brazoria County Groundwater Conservation District, and Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, has produced this dataset of water-level changes and approximate water-level altitudes in the Chicot, Evangeline, and Jasper aquifers in the Houston-Galveston region, Texas. This dataset shows current-year (2015-2016) water-level changes for each aquifer, 5-year (2011-2016) water-level changes for each aquifer, long-term (1990-2016 and 1977-2016) water-level changes for the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers, and long-term (2000-2016) water-level changes for the Jasper aquifer. The...

Please note: a more recent version of this dataset is available. Users are strongly advised to access the newer version of the dataset at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9YGUE2V. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the HarrisāGalveston Subsidence District, City of Houston, Fort Bend Subsidence District, and Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, produced a dataset through 2017 of compaction values in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers in the HoustonāGalveston region, Texas. This dataset contains compaction values of subsurface sediments (mostly in the fine-grained silt and clay layers because little compaction occurs in sand layers) in the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers that were recorded continuously...

The decline of Taxodium distichum, bald cypress, forests along the Gulf Coast of North America is partly due to elevation loss and subsequent flooding. In many coastal wetlands, a common approach for coastal restoration is to rebuild elevation through the application of dredge spoil, but this technique has not been used widely in coastal forests due to concerns of negatively impacting trees. This experiment explored health responses of Nyssa aquatica, water tupelo, and T. distichum saplings to applications of low salinity dredge spoil in a greenhouse setting. Compared to controls, saplings of T. distichum grown in 7 and 15 cm sediment depths had higher final heights, and stem and total biomass while N. aquatica...

Changes to the coastline and to coastal features, such as spits, barrier islands, estuaries, tidal guts and lagoons were mapped for over 22,000 km of coastline along the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska coasts in western Alaska. Changes to rivers and lakes near the coast were also captured. The analysis was based on time-series analysis of Landsat imagery, 1972–2013. An annual imeseries of suitable Landsat imagery was compiled and analyzed for changes in near-infrared reflectance to identify areas that transitioned from land to water, or vice-versa, over the study period. The timing of changes was also identified. Thousands of coastal changes over the 42-year study period exceeded the 60-m pixel resolution of the Multispectral...

The Central Valley, and particularly the San Joaquin Valley, has a long history of land subsidence caused by groundwater development. The extensive withdrawal of groundwater from the unconsolidated deposits of the San Joaquin Valley lowered groundwater levels and caused widespread land subsidence—reaching 9 meters by 1981. More than half of the thickness of the aquifer system is composed of fine-grained sediments, including clays, silts, and sandy or silty clays that are susceptible to compaction. In an effort to aid water managers in understanding how water moves through the aquifer system, predicting water-supply scenarios, and addressing issues related to water competition, the United States Geological Survey...

This data release is a compilation of annual Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveys of a network of 26 vertical control points (benchmarks) in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. Surveys are conducted annually during the winter and are structured to collect a minimum of 24-hours of position data when possible, at an interval of 30-seconds or less at each benchmark location. Raw GPS survey files are downloaded and converted to Receiver Independent Exchange Format (RINEX) and post processed using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Online User Positioning Service (OPUS) Projects 4.12 software package following guidance and best practices...

The USGS Powell Center Cascadia earthquake hazards working group compiled published onshore and offshore paleoseismic data along the Cascadia subduction zone, spanning sites from Vancouver Island to the Mendocino triple junction. Evidence for megathrust rupture includes coastal land-level change, tsunami inundation, onshore shaking proxies such as landslides or liquefaction, and offshore shaking proxies such as marine turbidites. The quality of paleoseismic data for megathrust rupture along the Cascadia subduction zone collected over the past three decades varies because analytical capabilities and data collection methodologies have evolved. Thus, as part of the compilation, we also present a ranking scheme to assess...
