San Fernando Earthquake, February 9, 1971, 6:01am PST. (Roll 9, Frame 8). Oblique air view northeast of collapsed structures at interchange of HIGHWAYS 5 and 210. The collapse of curved overpass at left and center is due to seismic shaking and to lateral extension of the north and south abutments thereby shortening the chord and putting the structure under compression. Continuation of collapsed structure can be seen near right margin. The collapsed decks above railroad (center right) were set on piers at each end. Seismic shaking moved piers away from each other, enough to remove support from decks. Rerouted other traffic in foreground, San Gabriel Mountains in background. Feb 11, 1971.
