The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

This data release documents grid cells and modeled groundwater levels for hydrologic characterization of aquifer areas used for public drinking-water supply in California’s Central Valley from 1990 to 2020. Observations of spring groundwater level (median depth to groundwater measured from January through April) were calculated for selected wells from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) periodic groundwater level measurements dataset (DWR, 2021) that had data for >50% of years from 1990 to 2020. Spring groundwater levels for years without data were imputed by multiple linear regression on the top five most correlated records within the same Central Valley subregion (Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin...

The Pod (or pods) of Mature Source Rock is a critical element of the Total Petroleum System and incorporates all source rocks that potentially have generated hydrocarbons within the system. The Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province, and incorporates the known limit of thermally mature, organic-rich source rock(s) that is responsible for generating and expelling discovered and undiscovered petroleum accumulations, shows, or seeps within the Total Petroleum System. The Pod(s) of Mature Source Rock boundary was mapped by the province geologist after studying the extent of the source rock facies and the temperature and burial...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays were defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity, characterizing aquifer systems, and documenting the effects of oil field water injection in the Elk Hills Elk Hills, Buena Vista, and Coles Levee Oil Fields, San Joaquin Valley, California. Data provided in this data release include borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of water samples, hydrologic data, geological formation depths, and information on observed well log resistivity anomalies—interpreted to be from injection for disposal of produced water from oil wells or from natural causes. The data reported here were...

Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The San Joaquin Basin Province is located in south-central California, encompassing all or parts of Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Stanislaus, and Tulare counties. The main population centers within the study area are Bakersfield, Fresno, and Modesto. The province boundary was drawn to...

The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

A three-dimensional groundwater flow model (MODFLOW200-FMP1_1) of the Central Valley in California was developed to aid water managers in understanding how water moves through the aquifer system, to predict water-supply scenarios, and to address issues related to water competition. The USGS Groundwater Resources Program made a detailed assessment of groundwater availability of the Central Valley aquifer system, which includes: (1) the present status of groundwater resources; (2) how these resources have changed over time; and (3) tools to assess system responses to stresses from future human uses and climate variability and change. This effort builds on previous investigations, such as the USGS Central Valley Regional...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater total dissolved solids (TDS) and characterizing clay layers and faults in the Poso Creek Oil Field in Kern County, California. Data for the Poso Creek Oil Field area include analyses of historical produced water samples from oil wells, borehole geophysical data, and geological formation depths. The data reported here are used in an accompanying interpretive manuscript that describes groundwater TDS, stratigraphic layers, and geologic structure in the study area. Some of these data were archived scanned pages in raster format...
Groundwater arsenic concentrations in the San Joaquin Valley have varied over the decades from 1980 to 2019. This report was compiled to determine whether arsenic concentrations are increasing or decreasing and the mechanism controlling the trends. The San Joaquin Valley contains 4,979 wells with arsenic analyses and possible co-detections of any of the following constituents: dissolved oxygen, field-measured pH, iron, manganese, sulfate, nitrate, or water level. Water quality data comes from two sources: 3,302 wells from with California State Water Resources Control Board - Division of Drinking Water and 1,448 wells from the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (California State Water Resources...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of province is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. This dataset is a compilation of data that has been studied and published separately, and in some cases adjacent provinces do not share a common boundary. As a consequence, there are numerous gaps and overlaps in this layer.
