Between A.D. 1181 and 1200, in the early part of a climatically wet period, corn was imported to Chaco Canyon from a region outside the Chaco Halo (defined in this paper as the region between the base of the Chuska Mountains and Raton Wells). Strontium-isotope (87Sr/86Sr) analyses of 12 corn cobs dating to this period match 87Sr/86Sr ratios from five potential source areas, including: the Zuni region, the Mesa Verde-McElmo Dome area, the Totah, the Defiance Plateau, and Lobo Mesa. The latter two areas were eliminated from consideration as possible sources of corn in that they appear to have been unpopulated during the time period of interest. Therefore, it appears that the corn cobs were imported from the Zuni region,...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The San Juan Basin Province is located in South Western Colorado and North Western New Mexico, encompassing all or parts of Montezuma, La Plata, and Archuletta Counties in Colorado and all or parts of San Juan, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Mckinley, Bernalillo, and Cibola Counties in New Mexico. The main population centers within the study...

The Colorado Plateau structural province features long monoclinal flexures between uplifts and basins that are the major lines of deformation within and marginal to the Plateau. These folds are named, well-known, and have been described as part of several previous tectonic syntheses of the Colorado Plateau (Kelley, 1955; Davis, 1978; 1999). However, no digital data have ever been created that locate these folds in digital map space. This digital dataset compiles mapped locations of monoclinal folds from several geologic maps from the Colorado Plateau, most released only in “paper”, non-vector format. Fold names and their general map trace were guided by regional-scale maps that synthesize the tectonic elements of...

This dataset is intended to provide seamless, integrated geologic mapping of the U.S. Intermountain West region and is supported by the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. Surficial and bedrock geology are included in this data release as independent datasets at a variable resolution from 1:50,000 to 1:250,000 scale. Initial contributions to this data release are along an east-west transect along 37-degrees north latitude that extends from the Rio Grande Rift and Great Plains in the east to the Basin and Range and Sierra Nevada to the west. Other areas of the Intermountain West region will be incorporated over time. Data are presented as downloadable file geodatabases (*.gdb)...

Coal combustion by-products (CCBs, in the form of ash) produced at the coal-fired San Juan Generating Station in San Juan County, New Mexico, have been buried in former surface-mine pits at the San Juan Coal Mine since power-generation operations began in the early 1970s. A groundwater flow model was developed by the USGS to estimate the timing of groundwater recovery after the cessation of mining and to identify potential pathways and advective travel times for groundwater transport of metals that may be leached from stored CCBs to arrive at hydrologic receptors after mining operations cease. The USGS numerical modeling package MODFLOW-NWT with MODPATH particle-tracking software was used. This USGS data release...

This dataset is intended to provide seamless, integrated, surficial geologic mapping of the U.S. Intermountain West region and is supported by the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. Surficial geology included as part of this data release is compiled at a variable resolution from 1:50,000 to 1:250,000 scale. No original interpretations are presented in this dataset; rather, all interpretive data are assimilated from referenceable publications. Initial contributions to this data release are along an east-west transect that parallels 37-degrees north latitude extending from the Rio Grande Rift and Great Plains in the east to the Basin and Range and Sierra Nevada to the west....

Situated in a remote corner of northwestern New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park (CCNHP) was once the center of a sophisticated social, political and architectural civilization with a 50,000-square mile sphere of influence. The park protects the greatest concentration of Chacoan historical sites in the American Southwest and is arguably the most significant prehistoric site in North America. Following decades of unsuccessful attempts to develop usable near-surface water sources, the National Park Service constructed a 3,100-foot deep well into the Gallup Sandstone aquifer in 1972, providing the park with the first reliable drinking water source since it was established in 1907. The ~100-foot thick...

Under the direction and funding of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) with guidance and encouragement from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), there has been a decadal strategic plan in place to call for geologic mapping across the nation. This call has been increasing the need for digital data that has not yet been made available. With such a demand, physical data is being re-released as vector-based, GIS operable data, which is viable as a corporate asset to the USGS. This collection of reports is part of the compilation and synthesis efforts hampered by the distributed nature of subsurface investigations at the USGS and a general lack of cataloging and archiving of 3-D geological...

The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

This data release presents geologic map data for the bedrock geology of the Blanca Peak, Walsenburg, Trinidad, and Alamosa 30' x 60' quadrangles, Colorado. Geologic mapping incorporates new interpretive contributions and compilation from published geologic map data sources primarily ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:50,000 scale. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on digital elevation model and natural-color image data sources to improve spatial resolution of the data. Spatial adjustments and new interpretations also eliminate mismatches at source map boundaries. This data set represents only the bedrock geology; deposits of unconsolidated, surficial materials that are typically,...

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, hydrocarbon plays were defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The province boundaries were drawn on the county lines that most closely followed the natural geologic boundaries.

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

This is a shapefile and the final unioned polygon coverage used to calculate coal resources of the Fruitland Formation, San Juan Basin coal assessment area, Colorado and New Mexico. Polygons that make up the final unioned polygons include counties, 7.5' quadrangles, townships, surface and coal ownership, reliability, overburden categories, and net coal thickness categories. The final unioned coverage was clipped by the resource boundary polygon, which is described in the metadata file for the shapefile SJB_BND.
