The Henry Mountians , 44 miles from Halls crossing, to the north (left?). Bull Frog Creek enters from the left. Halls Crossing is 98 miles below the mouth of Green River and 37 miles above the San Juan. About 40 square miles at left in photograph 217 lies under the 3,900 foot contour. Noon. Crossing the Canyonlands section of the Colorado Plateau, the Colorado and Green Rivers are in deep colorful canyons in Jurassic, Triassic Permian and Pennsylvanian rocks. Looking up the Colorado River at The Loop about 6 miles above the junction of the Green River. The gorge is about 500 feet deep; the broad bench is underlain by the Permian (Cutler Formation), and no river gravels were found on it. In the distance, about 8 miles away, are the cliffs of the Triassic and Jurassic rocks, about 1,200 feet high. In early Miocene (about 25 million years ago) much or most of the canyonlands still were covered by Cretaceous shale (Mancos Shale) River deposits correlated with glacial deposits in the La Sal Mountains indicate...
