Grass Carp Ctenopharyngodon idella was imported to the United States in the 1960s for research into its usefulness as a biocontrol agent for nuisance aquatic vegetation. Escapees and intentionally stocked individuals founded wild, spawning populations in the Mississippi River and tributaries to the Laurentian Great Lakes. USGS-led research on the Sandusky River, a tributary to Lake Erie, demonstrated spawning of Grass Carp in 2015. In 2017, sampling with ichthyoplankton nets in the Sandusky River produced thousands of fertilized eggs on four dates during two distinct spawning events. A dye tracer study was completed on the lower Sandusky River between July 11-13, 2017, during a confirmed Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) spawning event. The data contained in this data release include time series of dye concentration at fixed stations downstream of the injection site. Six submersible fluorometers (Turner Designs C3TM fluorometers) were deployed at predetermined stations between 1.19 and 16.05 river miles downstream of the injection point on July 10, 2017, approximately 24 hours prior to the injection. A dye tracer study was completed on the lower Sandusky River between July 11-13, 2017, during a confirmed Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) spawning event downstream of Ballville Dam near Fremont, Ohio. The data contained in this data release include three-dimensional water-velocity data and discharge measurements collected using acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) deployed from two U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) survey boats stationed on the river during the study. Each boat was equipped with a 1200 kHz Teledyne RDI Rio Grande ADCP and differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with sub-meter accuracy in horizontal position using the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) differential correction....

Data includes grass carp position and sampling data from 2020 to 2022. We used grass carp that were implanted with acoustic transmitters. The position data was generated in Fathom Position from receivers that composed several VEMCO Positioning Systems (VPS). We also queried the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation Network (GLATOS) to obtain non-VPS position detections from receivers made from multiple projects across Lake Erie and associated tributaries. Sampling data was downloaded from the grass carp capture database hosted on ArcGIS Online These data contain information such as location of event, time gears were deployed and retrieved, and number of grass carp caught.

Data includes fish abundance and habitat data collected at ten sites in the Sandusky River, OH. Fish were collected using two 3.67 m long hoop nets with an initial hoop diameter of 0.91 m. Nets were set perpendicular to the current, opening toward the shoreline. Nets were set for approximately 24 hours and catch rates for each set were defined as the number of fish caught in the two hoop nets per 24-hour sampling period. Fish were identified to species, measured for total length (mm), and released. Water quality was taken daily at each site at approximately the same time of day with a YSI Exo2 multiparameter sonde. This data set is a compilation of data from two sampling efforts (2010 and 2014), focused on determining the presence and distribution of organic contaminants throughout the United States portion of the Great Lakes watershed. Water-borne contaminants were monitored in 69 tributaries of the Great Lakes using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs), and polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS). Analyses included 185 chemicals (143 detected) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), legacy and current-use pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and organophosphate fire retardants, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, industrial chemicals, surfactants, and others.

The development of a reliable method of age estimation for Grass Carp is necessary for the successful management of this invasive species. Multiple federal and state agencies with assistance from commercial fishers collected adult Grass Carp from 2012 to 2018. Ossified parts were collected from these fish, and age estimates from them were compared to develop an age estimation method. Here we provide the data used in that effort.

Image and biometric data were collected for 22 species of fish from Great Lakes Tributaries in Michigan and Ohio, and the Illinois River for the purpose of developing a fish identification classifier. Data consists of a comma delimited spreadsheet that identifies image file names and associated fish identification number, common name, species code, family name, genus, and species, date collected, river from which each fish was collected, location of sampling, fish fork length in millimeters, girth in millimeters, weight in kilograms, and personnel involved with image collection. Biometric data are saved as .csv comma delimited format and image files are saved as .png file type.

As part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) project template 774-GC10 entitled, “Characterization of hydrology and sediment mobility to inform design and implementation of a seasonal barrier to disrupt invasive grass carp reproduction in the Sandusky River near Brady’s Island, Ohio”, two bathymetric surveys of the Sandusky River from the Hayes Avenue bridge to the Ohio State Route 6 bridge were completed. The first survey was done by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on March 1, 2023 and the second was started on May 29, 2024 and was completed May 30, 2024. From 2017-2023, a total of 934 Grass Carp were removed from the Lake Erie basin and tributaries, and 159 were captured in the Mississippi, Missouri, and Lamine Rivers within the state of Missouri in 2022. For each captured fish we documented capture location, water temperature; we measured total length and total weight. Length data was used to assess the removal efforts in Lake Erie. A subset of Lake Erie captures (n=121), and Missouri captures (n=153) were histologically sampled to determine age-at-maturity, fecundity type, developmental timing, and spawning strategies. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) was analyzed to determine if it is a valid proxy for maturity.
